Cup for track/road toy?

Steve

Well since Tommy left several months ago been saving & can't decide what to get.

Been looking for a car thats track / road friendly.

Got enough cash for most cars, but in these times thinking of leaving it in the bank & getting something cheaper.

Don't need a motor till Feb but was toying with a well looked after Cup!

Seen several low mile, belted, late models for £4K ish.

Would this be a good or bad move?

How reliable are they as my cars usually have warranty support?

May even get another Trophy as these are now hovering round £6K?

Which is the better buy?

No stupid replys, thanks.

For a track toy, a cup or a ph1 172 would get my vote. Both light, cheap. A decent ph1 on coilovers with decent brakes, is what you want. Let me know if you want to drive mine Steve.
(I didn't think there would be much difference, but the cable throttle is nicer than the fbw on the cup).

  audi a6 3.0tdi
Ive had two ph1's and love them, my mate has a williams and that is amazing round track. As said above fly by wire just doesn't have the same feel or responsiveness as the cable throttle

  Clio RS 172 /Trafic
The ph1 172 is awesome! I've only had mine since september and am made up with it.i've fnally got some decnt tyres on it and it handles really well. I took it out for a blast round the lanes late last night and it just gives me a huge grin every time I drive it. Clarksons analogy to it being like the puppy that would grab the vicars leg is wholly appropriate! Although he was referring to the 182 cup. But any of the 2 litre clios come under that category in my opinion.

  B/G 182 + PH1 Track
errrrrr yes,

has been proven more times than i care to remember. but once again.....

http://videos.streetfire.net/video/williams-vs-172_70144.htm

both cars about the quickest of the marque at the time

bit of hoonin around hehe. btw was an rs day..where did the 172s go??? further n further backwards

Lol....1 driver Vs another driver ect. Im sure that someone like fred/markcup of here would be quicker than most ppl in 1.2s round a track.
Oh and we have pasted williams clios on track in our PH1....:rasp:

lol....i raped fred round spa in a cup..................ur point is??

ask for an honest opinion on it from ppl that have actually raced em. most willys that u race will probably be stickered up 1800s. most ppl wont even know how to tell the difference.

there is countless proof on here, youtube, streetfire etc etc to dispel the myth that the newer clios are actually quicker. how many mk1 vs mk2 days have there been down the strip?? 1 .............why.......cos the mk2 owners took their ball home wen they got thrashed.

iv driven both in same states of tune.......the williams would win hands down. the ppl that know what they are actually on about will agree.

This has gone way off topic, whats the point in talking about mk1's, AFAIK Steve's isn't looking at mk1's. Talking mk2's, a cup or ph1 172 would be a better track car than a Trophy.

i remember that! i go past at like 300mph and then just fail epically down the fast bit (that red one and that megane went back past too) and you get past out of the bus stop! the cam timing was out of that car, but jon would still be quicker even if the car had been reet

the only way i could get by jon was to cheat and use yozza's car ;)

thats his statement.

just pointing him in the direction of a car that will give loads more smiles per mile than any of the 172/182 non trophy range. so id say.....tis well on topic.

only problem with the mk1's is they can be a money pit, but thats the same with the mk2's aswell if you buy a shitter

remember yoz's black valver jon? (gaz's old one) yoz spent over 2K on that, and it was a minter, but then yoz wasn't exactly kind to it LOL

as for the old vs new..........for the money , my bet would be on old evry fukkin time......rs2000 vs rs focus.....hmmmm. no brainer, mk1 golf gti, vs the current crock o s**t git............again no brainer.....................205/309 gti vs the 10007 or woteva pugs new hot hatch is........again no brainer

old skool is cool...............and faster............and more fun

I am a fuckwit who cant handle a proper car...i would choose a mint Mk2 Mexico over a brand spanking Focus RS.

Regardless of speed (i have no experience of either) old wins everytime!

My Dad had a mk2, full roll cage, amazing machine!
I expected some respect just for loving cool cars lol! Turns out my opinion on cool+old cars is wrong!

Er no. Read the original post. Asks if a cups a good move, regarding reliability etc, then asks if a trophy would be better. No advice asked re other cars that i can read. Actually specifically asks for no stupid replies.

I understand, he had an RS2000 too, and a mk1 1.3!
Even so, to be fair the mk2 is still insane, I've got a mate with a mk2 shell, fully caged with a 20v 4age Corolla engine in, madness!

KwikFit are 'fitters' not mechanics, although i'm sure you knew that.

Sounds like you know your stuff, quite refreshing on this forum.

Sorry for the hijack!

think u will find all ur lookin for there......no mention of it HAVING to be a cup or ph1 172 or trophy......jus askin for pros and cons.

no mention of it HAVING to be a clio at all to be honest.

but again. a williams will run rings round most things sub 5k.

if u cant be arsed to read the original post then please shut the fuk up.

Read the post. Would buying a cup be a good idea? Are they reliable? Would a trophy be a better idea? Which is the better buy. Only talks about 2 cars there fella. But seeing as you don't seem able to read that post, i'm sure you can't read this one. Carry on ;)

I'll probably get a few infraction points, but hey worth it for a good conversation!
I've never driven an old school escort, can't wait to though!

Tempted by a 2.8 Capri as a toy though, bit of weld in the diff and happy days!

Personally prefer the mk2 looks, but what makes the mk1 better (genuine question)?
Your's sounds like awesomeness on 4 wheels!
