Cup Overheated

  clio 200
Sat on motorway in traffic jam this morning closely behind a lorry. when all of a sudden i noticed the temp guage at its maximum and the stop light on with the engine management light.

Stuck in traffic so turned engine off and started again after 5 mins and then temp had gone back down to normal which seems a little odd.

Did smell as though it might have getting close to overheating but havent lost any water from header tank and had to drive back home and seemed fine all the way.

Any ideas????

  RS RIP
Thermostat stuck/broken ? This would/could suddenly stop the watercirculation going..

well im not sure about the fan i think it may have something to do with that as i dont think it did

It would overheat driving if the stat was stuck shut, start it on your dry and check if the fan comes in etc!

I had a similar problem on my williams. Car kept over heating when stuck in traffic. At first it would over heat because the fan wasnt comeing on, i changed the fuse and it kept blowing it. But then one day it purged all the water out as well as the fan not working. What had happened is that the wires fors the thermosate and fan had been chewed away due to old age/ dogy care over the years. Once i had found the bad connection in the loom, it was just a case of reconnecting the broken links and tidying up that part of the loom. That was about 3 months ago and i havent had any problems since.

Check your fan mate.

well i have just run the car for 20 mins and the fan has cut in and the temp guage hasnt moved above what it normally sits at, took ages for the fan to come in but defo did. How strange????

sorry no help to you

Mine did exactly that once

Only once & not since about 2 years ago!

yep - strange

  Megane dci 130
Sounds like a sensor problem to me being that it was normal 5 mins later when you turned the ignition back on again.

  clio 200
yeah thats what i thought, maybe some water got into a sensor as its been chucking it down and motorway was well wet

  A SHED!
On my old 16v i had a low temp thermostat and fan switch. Ive noticed nobody does them for the 172? Anyone know if somebody does them?

you'll prob find the thermostat is the same.. and 172's dont run a fan switch, they use the temp sensor, then the ecu controls the fan

not really needed though as 172 cooling systems are pretty up to the job

Yup i found that my fan stopped coming on a while back.

And your correct, without the fan, stuck in traffic at 30 odd degree's...i was like ohhh great.

But the cooling system handled it very well without the aid of the fan :)

ditz, is the fan dual/variable speed? (just wondering)

mine has aircon removed and it varies speed still too
