cup race cars

  Nippy white cup

I dont think their horsepower is amazing. Mostly down to the seq gearbox and other bits. I think 0-100 is about 11 secs?

Chris

I have driven them a few times at bedford, only difference in power is different exhaust system - good for 180bhp lower weight 900+KG (i think)

Stripped out interior but weight of full roll cage, but i think the reason for such quick acceleration is the sequential box just floor it and punch it through the gears no clutch needed, same for downshifts very tricky to get used to on the downshift though. have to watch you dont unsettle the car to get the back end out of shape... top fun!

so all we need is a mk1 172 chasis, strip it bare and attach mk2 172 bodywork, then change the box for a sequential... et voila.. Cup racer.

Or mk2 chassis, ditch the fbw add a sequential and strip it.

0-60 just under 6, and handling is ok if you dont piss your pants because a clio Rs on he edge is NOTHING for wimps. It just very twitshy on the backend but if you take a corner the right way the car will be balanced.

And the Sequential 6 is SUPURB.

At least that is my experience

The cup racer does 0-60 in 6.0 but carries 196 bhp/tonne.It laps bedford autodrome in 1.24.95

The road cup laps the autodrome in 1.26.30 and carries 171 bhp/tonne so only a 1.5 sec difference on the racer

Just out of interest, the new m3 laps it in 1.26.85 and the subaru wrx does it in 1.28.35 which is the same as a standard 172.

Just shows you eh...

A road cup has 171bhp/tonne?

I think youll find it has 168 per tonne.

Dont worry my anorack is already on.:)

Well, they are fantastic cars, the box is damn good - so damn good its still on my shopping list, but you cant do cluthless downshift like Seedy says...... and yes they are skitish on the edge - I know Ive spun a few, but then youve gotta find the limits somehow :)

Id love to see someone put one up the strip, cos 0-100 is about 10.5ish seconds, so a 1/4 would be a really nice time.

@roamer

I have to correct you mate clutchless downshift is possible but is not done often. This is because when you downshift the clio is getting a lot of torque on the road and the car will be twitchy/instable going towards the corner. But about 40% in cliocup holland is doing clutchless downshift also. Upshift ALWAYS clutchless of course.

cheers

p.s. a complete sequential costs € 8000 new !!

Well yours are driven by racer drivers whilst bedfords cars would of been driven by people who cant even drive a milkfloat so ill take wear/cold into consideration! But ive used better sequentials..i had to really thump the clios shifts. Still, they look ace!

The cars above at Bedford are actually limited to 6000rpm for longetivity purposes. The proper cup race cars top out at 8000rpm and would put a lot more than 1.5 seconds into std road going cup. (source evo magazine)

Great that the cup beats an M3 hee hee:D

Yup, not much more power and not much lighter either...

The gearbox is a major factor here!

the gearbox is nice, but it isnt some magic box which increase wheel power and turns shifts into 2 sec beating monster.

Slicks, weight play a larger role.
