Cup - worrying knocking noise (not from the front!)

Today my so far faultless 172 Cup (two years old tomorrow) developed a really loud banging noise when accelerating or decelarating at low speeds (30 and under generally), anything above that is fine which I thought was odd, I took it up past 5000rpm and there were no problems at all, only ever at town traffic speeds. Its not the usual knocking that comes from the front mounts or anything like that (I already put up with that!), its not quite as mechanical sounding as that particular 'quirk'.

It sounds like its coming from the inside somehow, around the area of the boot on the drivers side (which squished my first impression - that it was a loose exhaust or something) and its loud enough to be of considerable concern.

Any ideas? The boot is empty but when I get back from work I'm going to completely strip out the rear and see if it still does it. If so its going into Renault...which could be fun considering its Christmas.

Seems to be coming from the other side and oddly sounds like interior. Will have to strip it out and see what happens.

rear of the car dude.......

Stripped it out and was still doing it, so I got someone to check from outside and apparently it was very loud from out there too! Sounds like something is banging against the wheel but I couldn't see anything and its odd that its only at low speeds.

Got it into Platinum Renault in Trowbridge just before they shut today, they seemed as confused as I was!

They will take a look tomorrow. Worringly there are no parts deliveries until a week today now, so if I need a part I'm screwed!

Unbelievable! Surgical scalpel in the inside sidewall of my rear drivers side tyre. Even more annoying is that it was a brand new (couple weeks old) Conti Sport Contact.

So I had the dilemma of having a car stuck at Renault (no spare obviously) and no companies out there able to deliver a decent tyre until after Christmas. Opted for them to replace it, getting absolutely shafted on the price but never mind!

Absolutely no idea how it got there, I hope I ran over it or something but the fact that it was in the sidewall is a bit worrying, hope nobody did it on purpose. They said they saw a bit of metal sticking out, started pulling it and it just kept coming and coming.

I suppose I do have to laugh, but £100 down two days before Christmas didn't feel too amusing earlier, especially as it was a new tyre that had barely worn in!

You ever had new tyres fitted on it at a garage?

If so they probably changed the valve, which to take out can be cut from the inside, then pulled through with a tool. Probably went to change the blade half way through the job and forgot?

Yeah had new tyres put on only a few weeks back at the local Pro-Tyre. So you think it was in there and had managed to work its way out in the end? That seems to make a lot of sense, here is a detailed pic of the tool, I've checked online and it is a scalpel handle without a blade...

Yeah, probably started out being pushed between the inner of the tyre sidewall and the rim of the alloy. Can't see how they missed it though? :S

Maybe caused a slow leaking, so the pressure went down, so it fell out of place.

Take it back to them and say "Look what I found inside my tyre, Yeah, thanks lads...."
