CV Boot / driveshaft boot question (confused!)

Car  coiled 'berg
i was potching with the coilies today and noticed something, on the drivers side, where the driveshaft goes into the box.. the boot his split and chucked gunk everywhere!
what is this part? Ive searched on here and people are mentioning a new shaft :S is this a DIY job of just getting a boot or is the new shaft needed???
also if this is a new boot job, how easy is the job????

sorry for all the confusion!

You can't get a new inner boot, new shaft from renault time i'm afriad. Easily DIY if your compentant. Otherwise best leaving it to someone who knows what they're doing.

You used to be able to get the inner boot kit from GSF, unsure if you still can if not its a new shaft job

i bought by gaitors from gsf and got them done along with my brakes and had no problem with them spliting again

I went to renault and priced up what i think is what i need, they are about £50 apparently. but the guy serving me said they came in two sizes... a 25 and a 28.2
I asked what this 'size' referred to and he didnt know!!, any ideas? possibly shaft diameter I was thinking

if it's a ph2, you CANNOT get an inner boot. Tried and failed. Renault ordered in every variant listed on their system and none were right

new shaft is £201.08 + VAT

hi, I have a phase2 - 2004. Inner boot is toast. Renault NZ cant confirm which boot, but reading everything here it sounds like a new boot isnt possible. I am not that keen on a new or used shaft from the UK as the freight is plenty. Has anyone recently found a boot for these? Its the inner one that fits into the metal canister >> see pic when I had it out last wkend for a looksee. Any advice for second hand if thats the only choice? cheers all.

nice one Bloke. Cheers. Did you fit it ok? I am assuming that the boot has an interference fit with that metal canister with a rubber rib or something so it just squeezes in??

Side - is not replaceable. I have just had mine out again. The boot is swaged (end of the boot is crimped between the cylinder and an inner metal ring) into the metal cylinder at the factory and cannot be replaced with like for like. In the UK it makes sense to get a complete shaft second hand. What I did is fit a new boot that goes outside the metal cylinder. We had to cut a few mm of surplus engine block away but it fits like a champ. See photos attached of CV with metal ring out (you have to destroy to remove so that the joint can come out) and new boot being fitted.
