Daily Turbo?

Hey, ive been looing around for answers but not much luck so il risk the abuse and just ask.

Do many of you which have turbod 1*2's use them as a daily??? And what setup are you running??
 
Yes mine was a daily c**til taken of road for rebuild) lpt 222hp, soon to be 300+ daily.

Yeah they drive fine, but don't rely on it as your sole car, something will most probably go wrong at sometime.
 
Mine is my daily, new clutch and remap to 250bhp in a few weeks... May drop in some different internals n go for 280-300 end of summer if 250 gets boring :-)
 
Mine is forged and I do a lot of miles so it wouldn't last a year before needing a rebuild realistically. Drives pleasant enough other than the clutch being a bit grabby though. Most performance hatches sold for daily use these days are turbo.
 
Ahh Chip hey, ive read alot of your posts about turbos, all very helpfull ive found. How long do they last befor a rebuild is in order on average?? And i assume it will be expencive.
Yeah almost every sport hatch is turbo now, but i would expect they are built to handle it for daily purpose whereas a bolt on kit i wasnt so sure on.
 
Totally dependant on spec mate. I reckon it would be easy enough to build a 250 bhp one to do 100k miles if you used new non forged pistons but tbh at that level a cheap secondhand bottom end is best bet and just replace it when it dies.
If you are on forged pistons then personally I would say 30k is doing well before a rebuild and I do that a year.

Depends where you use it. Personally I find anything under 500 bhp boring on a dual carriageway but a standard 172 epic on a B road.

Im very happy with my car on track, 300 bhp and very good drivability.
 
Ok i guess thats true, i have been looking at ktecs low boost on standard 97k old internals, id consider forging or replacing the internals if needs be too. Whatever makes it as reliable as possible tbh. 30k would be plenty in my view befor a rebuild.

Most of my drive home is B roads because i prefer them to A roads, but would like some extra power for the dual carriageways i do use. 300bhp is just wild in a clio, 250 will do me.
 
I don't think the ktec kits are very good value personally. Engine dynamics one is far better IMHO although I would go aftermarket management instead.
 
I looked at ED but i am not experainced enough or know enough to be changing things, other than ktec im not sure where to look. Unless ED would put an aftermarket on then that might change things. From what ive read a piggyback isnt very good to be running for long term.
 
For the record as well, almost all of the specialists on here will do customer engine work tailored to your personal spec if you don't want an off the shelf kit.

If you are seriously considering parting with the cash for someone to build it in entirety then I'd ask around.... A lot. :)

Yeah i will be taking that route unfortuantly, wish i could do it myself. I will have to ask around alot more then and see what people say. Cheers
 
No shame in that at all mate, I wouldn't know where to start lol!

Just emphasising that whilst Ktec do a bolt on price, most other specialists would take on the job but would need to price it individually.

Yeah £4200ish for ktecs kit i got quoted when i last went down there (then petrol and staying down there closer to 4500) and £3100 for ED which are close so not much extra, i know which id rarther pay. Reading up on the ED kit and talking to some people with it to see how it is in real life everyday.

You could always buy the ed kit minus the piggyback management, get scoff to fit it and install proper aftermarket.

I know. Wouldn't be a consideration for me either. I'd rather save a grand and have no comeback when it goes bang, but certainly a consideration if you can pick up the phone and have someone on the other end who you've paid for a service rather than a mate with a spanner (no disrespect to anyone's work or ability), I too would choose option one.

I only know of one company offering a warranty and they wont EVER admit they are wrong so I would say you have more chance of winning the lottery than ever getting a fair claim out of them.

Why would a forged set up only last about 30k yet a non forged 100 ? :S

Because forged ones run bigger clearances as they expand more which means that in turn you get more ring blow by from cold so they (and the bores) wear out quicker.

Thats why no manufacturers ever use forged pistons, and the ones you see referred to as forged are instead actually pressure cast ones.

Race parts are good for taking high loads for short periods but arent generally suited to high miles applications, like a straight cut gearbox for example, yes they can be stronger but they dont last anywhere near as long.

You can run the forged pistons a little less clearance on N/A but still similar issues.

the 30k/100k werent meant to be exact values, just a hint at the difference, I know people who have done 200K on original standard pistons for example, its very dependant on use, short journeys are FAR worse than longer ones. 5 * 2 mile journeys from cold is likely to cause more wear than 100 miles in one journey etc.
 
Im running a genuine disco potato (Garrett GT28RS) in my clio, and its spot on :D lots more to come from it once the new clutch and mapping is completed if thats any help?
 
My f4r is forged currently 335 bhp, had about 10k out of it and i run it daily for the commute to work. its rought till the piston's warm up but after that you can't tell its any different from the standard 182, had a few mates actually comment on how it feels totally normal until you give it some beans.
Just keep off the boost till it warms up and its sweet, i did boot it once while cold and ended up with an engine bay full of oil as it blew the dip stick out but later found the breather had a kink in the pipe.
I think about the only problem i have is in heavy traffic trying not to stall the engine, its a bit on / off when cold.
Running a rotrex though not a turbo, don't use my turbo as a daily.
 
Thanks for the info guys much apreciated and all helpfull, keeping off boost til warm will be easy for me as its about 5 miles of 40mph where i live and the pigs love to sit there with camera vans.


Anyone have turbotimers or just drive it gently last few miles of ya journey??
