Dash clocks *HELP* - please

I tried wiring the dash clocks from a 1.4 to my 1.2, everything worked bar the rev counter, which is what I want. There was the unused lead already behind the original clocks ready to be plugged in, as the 1.2 clocks don’t use it, but when I plugged it into the 1.4 clock, nothing happened when I started the car i.e. the rev counter didn’t give a reading. The clocks where from the scrappy, so might it have been the unit itself?

Does anybody know if it’s possible to do, or am I wasting my time and money?
