The one i wanted lol... happy bunny.

Not a DSLR, didn't want one, but possibly the best alternative (imho)

Very good cameras. I went for the Fuji s9600 after trying out both as I thought it had the slight advantage but you will not be disapointed with this.

Looking at prices it is about 239.99?

You do realise you can get a d40 with lens after cashback for about 260-270

IMO you would be daft NOT to pay the extra

But he will need extra lenses etc for the d40 whereas you dont for this. It is more than adequate so with a dslr you would have to pay way more than £260-£270

No he doesnt have to buy another lense but has the option to buy more as his skills improve. The lense on the Panny might cover a larger zoom distance but the quality will be far less. To be honest it wont be often he would need to use the massive zoom on the panny

it is £300.... i didn't want a DSLR.

all the reviews say this is the best camera you can buy at the moment, and beats many DSLR's surrounding the same price range (£250 - £350). My gf's dad is a pro photographer, and this is what he recommended me to get. I am a complete amateur though.

I wanted point & shoot but with RAW, huge optical zoom with OIS, wide angle lens, but in a compact body... and it is

Can I ask why not, for less money than you are paying you get a better camera with the scope to upgrade if you so wish. I dont see what you are gaining by spending more on an inferior camera as they are pretty much the same size........ So it cant be because your after a compact.

  Works...kind of...
I agree with Ras on this.

I cant see the logic in having something that is a lesser product yet costs more.

I have a bridge camera and I love it, but I paid a damn sight less than £300 for it!

Dont get me wrong bridge cameras are great but IMO you should seriously consider the Nikon fella

Just you wait, after a few hours it'll eat at ya, knowing that you cant brag on the internet that you have a DSLR.

At the end of the day, i travel a lot... and always travel light. I didn't want a 'kit-bag' just for my camera. I wanted something that i can carry about, that is lighter than a DSLR... but feels like a real camera.

The D40 is a camera that is years old now, and i also wanted something a lot newer in style and design. I am a complete novice in the world of digital photography, and wanted something that let me footer about with all the different settings... and has full variability of all normal settings found on a DSLR. So maybe... just maybe, i'll have a DSLR in a couple of years

Don't worry guys... I have every intention of retrofitting a cup splitter and turinis afterwards  :D

Sorry to prove you wrong but the D40 isnt old LOL. It looks nearly the same as the panasonic. Also with the Kit lens it weighs only 100grams more than the Panasonic ;)

The D40 wasnt released until the end of 2006!
