DCI tuning

Are the cheaper tuning units (plug in type) worth going for? What is the difference between these £150 ones and the £300+ ones that seem to get alot of mention on here.

cheers,

NICK

Not too sure about the difference Nick, might simply be a brand name thing. If ure looking for more power i'd recommend a full remap at somewhere like RS Tuing where i had mine done. Its knocked 2seconds off my 0-60, 30-50,50-70 times & increased my MPG by around 10%.

The price then was £345 all in. On the other hand, if you'd like a tuning box to try out, i'm selling my old one for £65.

The box will offer a very noticable increase, but just not in such a refined smooth way, as apparently all boxes do is increase the fuel pressure, forcing more fuel down its neck, resulting in more power. I have heard that our common rails are already running very high pressures hence why i just opted for the map. Up to you tho matey, £65's very appealing :p

Pm me if ure interested

I have a tuning box on (Dragon Performance) not bad for what it is & price I paid for it :)

Still - nothing makes me smile as much as kick from the 172 :approve:

I have had a few solutions on my DCi, standard at the mo though.

I have had a couple of remaps and a tuning box.

I'll start off with the box. It was from Dragon Performance UK, not sure if that's the same as Dragon Tuning you guys speak of.

Biggest pile of crap I've ever owned, shoddy design, and the fact it's simply boosting the numbers it's getting from the ECU before it passes them onto the common rail was a worry for me. It didn't touch the boost, which is a bit strange considering they told me the power gains would be on par with remaps.

After we installed it (took 5 minutes in fairness) and having the monkey at the workshop unplug it whilst the car was running, there were 3 stages of tune. 1, 2 and 3. I said put it on 3 as I'm not going to lose sleep over losing a few mpg from the current 50.

The test drive: Couldn't tell the difference.

Let's move on.

Have had a remap by superchips in which they did up the boost (can't remember off hand what bar it was before and after) which obviously allows more fuel which in diesel terms is more power.

That was a good modification. For a silly slow car, it was then slightly amusing. 5th wasn't dangerous for overtaking on shorter roads anymore, 3rd put the Clio 1.6 to bed and just gave an overall nicer drive.

I also had an Angel Tuning map. They come to you wherever you are, and also offer things like BMC induction kits yadda yadda yadda. I have to say it seemed to be the same sort of gain as the superchip, however they don't offer a warranty on the car. I also have a pretty good relationship with the people at superchips.

My advice. Superchip. If you're not worried about warranties etc (I wouldn't say there's any reason to be) and would rather have a £150 saving, for for an Angel Tuning remap.

PS If you want a few figures.

0-60s were timed by video on the same stretch of flat road with fairly abusive gear changes and Michellin tyres in the dry.

Standard: 10.7
DragonPerformance: 10
Superchips: 9

Didn't film it with Angel Tuning, but it would probably be 9 again. Keeping in mind that diesels have bad 0-60s on account of the 2 shifts, the DCi is a nippy little shitbox.

im really just after a box, something i can plug in and unplug, want a bit more go from my 80 if its possible to get it without risking damaging the engine.

Can't have it both ways mate.

My advice is simply: DONT GET A PLUG IN BOX.

I knew they were trouble before I got mine, but was simply curious. The fact it says "Don't Panic if your engine light comes on" about 29 times in the user manual should spell it out for you.

not worth getting at all?

tbh if a remap is £325 i really cant be bothered, the idea of £150 getting me some more torque just appealed.

Well someone's got to keep them in business I suppose. I paid £270 for the tuning box. You can always get one and return it if you don't like it.

Decent re-map £325

Tuning Box £150
Injectors £100 each
Diesel pump £300

Is it really worth it if your spending £150-200 may aswell add another £150 on and get it done properly. Those prices are about the minimum aswell. Not saying a tuning box WILL damage your car but its far more likely to than a re-map will.
