DCI Turbo Droping Off Boost

the wee bargain dci is running brilliant apart from one little problem, its dropping off boost at 3k revs, you hear the turbo dropping off and the car stops pulling then at around 3.3/3.4k revs you hear it spooling up again.

had the EGR valve off it yesterday which was covered in soot! gave it a clean out but problem still exists? anyone got any ideas?

noticed a little bit of oil on the heatsheild behind the turbo, is it on its way out?!

My parents dci65 is doing something similar to this;

It will pull ok up until 2k in 1st gear then just feel dead from there on (even if you floor it)
2nd gear isn't much better either

  In between cars....
My one did a similar thing, was an old gurl whod had it before me, i went out and rang its kneck for a couple nights, seemed to sort its self out

If the previous owner was anything like the dottery bugger that had mine its probably never seen boost!!

yeah it actually seems to be getting better, filled it with a tank of v-power diesel today and took it out a long blast taking it up near 5k (well past the power band) just to give it a good thrash. got fully synth oil coming for it and a new oil filter along with a K&N pannel filter see how it is after that :)

apparently it wasnt starting before i bought it but was sent to a diesel specialist and the bill came to over £300 but guy didnt know much about what was done, something to do with injectors he said

I had an expensive bill like that on my old Clio dci80 - one injector + Renault labour = £360 :dead:

My parents dci65 is also having the odd starting trouble, you have to turn it a few times before it fires occasionaly, but you always get it to go. very strange.

weird one, its starting 100% no problem there. and sometimes its perfect pulls right thru and others it cuts boost always at 3k though which happens at 80mph in 5th so overtaking isnt easy on motorway

Dad just had it serviced today and I asked did he get it looked at for the above but he persists that it is fine, from having the dci80 I know it should be a bit more lively than it is

You're only meant to do 70 on the motorway lol :rasp:

right guys had it on the motorway again tonight and its killing me, it will not go over 80mph at all unless you get a hill.

it pulls to 3k then you hear the turbo stop boosting, take your foot off the accelerator and floor it again and the turbo spools, boosts for about 1-2 seconds and then stops again?!

any idea at all, dont want to go spending a fortune changing the turbo to find its not cured it or it was something else?

also found this little hole in the pipe coming from the airbox, is there ment to be a sensor in here or has someone drilled this for some reason?

there shouldnt be a hole there, and it will be sucking unfiltered air into the turbo . plug it up with a bolt.

yep its been plugged up now, its deffo been drilled though and i cant see why you would do it, its not like its going to full a sensor into how much boost the turbos producing to get more power from it, because its before the turbo

Been drilled there for the "tssshh" sound i bet, but didn't work by the previous owner.

I was going to say that my mates tdi golf did what your saying, eventually found out the turbo diaphram was on the way out.

Is the cat blocked with carbon? That's what our merc had. 4k for an hour or so helped the cat to heat up and burn it off.

Get someone to hold it at 4k in neutral and listen at the exhaust to see if it kind of hisses - as if the air isn't escaping quick enough .

might possibly have found the answer guys, when looking at the fuel pipes i could see loads of air bubbles in them, its a possibility that the car wasnt getting enough fuel so was cutting boost?

ive not test drove it yet but ive bled the fuel system and we'll see what happens

they always have some air but this was loads, just had it out a drive and much better, full boost right thru the rev range, i can overtake now!! haha time to get it mapped and FMIC :p

yeah sorry air filters in, turbo seems to make a bit more noise with it, throttle response seems better and pulls a tiny bit harder on boost but keep in mind this was a very dirty renault filter it replaced.

as for the problem, i spoke to soon took it on the motorway tonight 4th gear 3,000 rpm it cut boost! lol and 5th!

first its hard to tell because it pulls past 3k easy, 2nd seems the same, 3rd gear its cutting boost but manages to pull past 3k slowly to get it back on boost but 4th and 5th it doesnt have the power to do it, im at the end of my knowledge i dont know enough about them, any other ideas?

yey its started again, not tried the above suggestion yet but surely it wouldnt be causing the problem if at 3.5k im getting a surge of power and torque? its just a flat spot. what about a turbo pressure sensor or something?

i know but i refuse to give renault any money to look at my car lol i can't get to the bottom of this its getting to me, tried to overtake a slow moving merc sprinter van tonight on a dual carridge way, half way past he floored it and left me for dust i had to pull back in lol

Do any lights come on?

Sounds like the same problem I had with mine when it was remapped. That was the map sensor (take the plug off and clean it up which will help).

PS Remapping these isn't the best idea especially if you're already having problems.

been that fed up just went out at 1:30am in the rain and started taking it to bits haha, found a broken boost pipe, was split where one of the sensors goes in, unpluged the sensor and problem got worse, so im assuming thats whats causing it! im on the case now!

super glued all the hose up untill i get a replacement and the thing feels rapid now haha that must have been the problem!!

that must be why i thought it was silly that people said they were on par or even faster with 1.2 16v, the 1.2 felt much quicker compaired to it but now its better!

good work lad, im gonna have to get the bonnet open on mine, its lost its kick and power it feels. had the remap done the other week, then put a cup splitter on the other day now it feels s**t! not sure if ive knocked something but it just feels dead slow to what it was last week!

replacement hose fitted tonight wee thing goes really well for what it is! the low down torque is amazing! it feels quicker low down than my 172 but ive not driven that in a month so im probably in for a shock haha!

now has a little problem where at full throttle the little orange light under the fuel light comes on and slightly cuts power, lift off and floor it and it goes off and full power again? i can live with that though haha

ive just cleaned the egr valve out tonight, looks brand new again, put it back on, car feels abit better, but still theres just a lack of torque, i just dont know whats causing it! its starting to feel like a petrol i just dont get it, its doing my f**king head in!!

I'd expect the dci 65 to be on a par with a 1.2 16v once rolling, i'd say the dci 80 is far quicker real world than the 1.2 16v. I find my 1.2 16v utterly gutless on dual carraigeways and motorways where as the dci's have decent amounts of torque so they pull well without having to constantly redline them. Oh and 70-75mpg @ 70-80 in the motorway is also 30mpg better than my 1.2 16v

Yes i do regret not getting a dci, much better stop-gap than a 1.2 16v before i get my sport.

edde is back!

is there any indications to tell if the turbo is on its way out? apart it being noisy?

I've raced a 1.4 16V with an exhaust on a private road and there not much in it realy and mines a 65.

Yep for a short while.

You'll hear it wine burn oil not make boost and if you take it out you'll see it damaged or the bearing having play in them.

dang it, i always thought I heard a high pitch wine while cruising on the motorway for a while, can you normally hear it more at high revs?

whats the life span normally on them? and how bigs the job changing the turbo?

cheers
