DCI Turbo

i have a 1.5 DCI 80
and i think the turbo may be faulty
it doesnt feel that much quiker than my old 1.2
and at motorway speeds doesnt accelerate like as quick as my friends does
same in general driving, his is the 65 model
and it pulls up hills much better than mine
is there anything i can check to see if it is a faulty turbo?

Does smoke come out of the exhaust when you rev it up (so it's on boost)

no, i havnt noticed any
its asif the turbo doesnt kick in
what revs should it hit at and is it possible if there a hole in a pipe the air pressure isnt sufficient?
