De-cat / Sports Cat

Sorry if they're silly questions:

How does a Sports Cat differ from a standard Cat?

Do all de-cats sound the same or are some better than others dependant on manufacturer?

Any downsides to fitting a de-cat to a 182? (apart from mot or being pulled over)

Will a Sports Cat last forever or will it need changing at some point in its life?

Cheers

A sports cat is more free flowing then a normal cat so the engine should rev more freely and you will gain torque/power.

A decat is just a pipe and so you remove the biggest restriction in the exhaust freeing up more torque and power.

No point of getting a sports cat for a 182 as at stock they are very free flowing anyway.

They are so easy to change on a 182 though that come MOT time you could just whip the standard cat on again if you decide to go for a decat. I'm not sure how the 182's respond to a decat so it might be worth a search to check.

i have a decat on mine, i wouldnt say its made much diff to the throttle response but depends what system your bolting it to it can make quite a diff in noise.

had mine on for about a year now, the std 182 cat is quite free flowing its 200cell.

i remember a few 182 drivers saying the torque was even less with a decat.

Yeah. 172's have a more restrictive cat where as 182 ones are less restrictive so less gain

Sports cats are pointless imo due to the cost and hardly any gain. Full deact or not at all

Ive got a sports cat sitting in the garage atm. It was a bargin so couldn't resist. Might try fit it this week to see if it does make any difference!

I'd say scorpion have fudged those figures tbh. Straight through exhaust system will always be better than a catted system, because it allows better flow of gasses etc.

ive dropped approx 7mpg in fitting a decat, but when it sounds that good i couldnt care less and it does tend to get abused a bit more.

Bloody hell didnt realise they affect mpg so badly. Why is this as its allowing the engine to breath better so run more efficiently.

  182
what are you serious? my MPG hasn't been affected whatsoever, made 40+ on the way back from leeds today down the M64 @70mph

+1

Should gain mpg if anything as the exhaust is more free flowing.

Probably the thing of, car sounds nice so you boot it more which = a down turn in MPG

Well I fitted my sports cat yesterday (never again!) and gave it a test drive this morning after the silicone had gone off. Its definately made a noticable difference.

Theres allot more torque low down and the 5k kick has pretty much disappeared I assume because the torque/power curve has been smoothed out more. Exhuast is also less boomy but is much louder on full throttle. I'm happy anyway especially for 100 notes :)
