is a de-cat illegal to have on a car ? me and my mate were talking bout it i thought it had to be sent out the factory with one as for emmions but once out of the fatory it can be removed as long as still passed its mot with it any body got any links to gov docs about this our any good information cheers

well its a wierd one from what i gather most cars sinse the late 80's or early 90's, do not have to legally have a decat on the car. but the car has to have a decat on it to pass the emissions test of an MOT, so it would not pass if it is not on making illegal as you will not get your car through an MOT. saying that some people on here have managed to get it the decat car through the MOT test. its all a risk removing it.

Any car from about june 1991 HAS to have a CAT on to be road legal. HAving a decat is technically breaking the law and your car wont pass MOT with a decat pipe fitted.
Theres a myth that if you give your car serious beans before an MOT with a decat it will pass, wouldnt bother trying though!

If your car passes mot emissions test with a decat, its legal.

Doubt it will, but a few have passed with them on.

it isn't legal to run without a cat, but your car must be within emissions tolerences...which might as well mean the same thing.

saying that, my old 172 passed emissions at a dealer with no cat! ...my mate who worked there was going to be 'easy-going' with the emissions test...but he never needed to!

i'm hoping when my car is old enough for an MOT, i will have the same luck!

thats what i thort as long was still in emissions bracket then it aint doing any more harm to enviroment
