Whichever has fuel
Chaps.
My mates 172 had a. New dephaser about 4 years ago but the engine has only done 150 miles since then.
On Friday it was taken on track (with its new throttle bodies and mtec ecu mapped by Sabre Tuning) and after a successful day, it conked out on the final cool down lap.
It failed to start and we checked everything.
Eventually we got it going and it sounds like the dephaser is rattling, but quite high pitched.
The noise is 100% coming from inside the top Cambelt cover though.
Does this sound possible? Or should we be looking elsewhere?
The diagnosis so far (I clean cars and he's a builder...) is that the dephaser has shat itself, knocked the timing out and hence the reason it wouldn't start.
We've had a. 182 before with a fucked beyond all fucked dephaser and it was a struggle to start. All solved when we fitted new belts and dephaser.
