dephaser pulley

I think my dephaser pulley is on its way, its only just started knocking slightly when cold.

Will i have to get this replaced asap?

Will the pulley fall apart cause im sure i read an old thread saying its verging on the impossible to fall apart

That's the sound of a failing dephaser pulley and as Gaz-Kev says it's normally when the engine is warm when the noise becomes apparent.

highly unlikely to fall apart. The only one I've ever seen claimed to have failed wasn't actually the dephaser pulley.

When i do a cambelt i clean out the pulley very thoroughly and i've been told on several occasions (when not told in advance that there was anthing suspect) that this has solved mildly noisy dephaser pulleys. ie the customer has come to collect the car and said it makes a noise, gone to show me, and the noise is gone

No, the noise is there when the engine was idling, when he revs it the engine noise drowns it out.

its impossible for it to fail completley, regular oil changes = happy engines and dephasers (ie every 6K IMO, oil is cheap enough, dephasers aren't!)

try an oil change and engine flush/top end treatment first, that should shut it up

Mine emits a lovely high pitch squeel when cold (when revved). I thought it was waterpump/tensioner/idler but checked them all and they seem fine.

Then when warm just makes the 'rattly dephaser' noise on idle, cant hear it when revved.

They were £141 Inc VAT @ Renault when I checked last week...

Then you've got the labour to fit it, new cambelt kit, etc.

it might shut it up, its cheaper to try that first anyway, rather than ripping it apart

how do you go about cleaning it? i mean without taking it off you'd struggle to clean the internals

that's what i mean, when it's off, a good soaking in running cleaning fluid to move anything that's clagged up. same kind of idea as a couple of oil changes to wash it out

Going to try flushing 1st and see what happens. Pissed off though as its not long had an oil change.

see my cambelt prcies in my trader area, same price, i won't charge for changing it (note i WILL NOT fit a 2nd hand item)

luckily you have a cup, so way cheaper

14mm allen key sockets are expensive from halfords.

If you dont have one, instead go down the aisle where the sump drain keys are and you can get a 3.8" 14mm allen key socket for like £2.

if anyone needs one I have one which has done hardly any mileage. my car had a complete new head, belt kit and dephaser pulley. spun a bearing and fooked the bottom end. I bought a complete engine so have all the top end spare.
