Dephaser pulley

  Evo 6, Mk5 Golf GTi
Hi there

Had dephaser pulley and belts replaced on my 172 cup by a Renault specialist
Car developed a missfire after the job was completed, I have replaced to ngk plugs and changed oil to millers 5w40 oil.

missfire is now gone. The dephaser still appears to be making noise once the car is warm, although cleanly pulls through the rev range.

anyone come across this before?

Which specialist did you go to?

Take it back if you're not 100% happy with the job they carried out.

If they're a well known and trusted specialist then they will rectify any mistakes/problems they have caused.

Dont want any names just yet, I have contacted them and now they believe its a solenoid causing the problem.
somehow I doubt this.
The way it's being dealt with I'm losing confidence and still think the dephaser pulley is at fault. Specialist claims he has never come across one going wrong.

Will try and take it back hopefully this week.

Give them opportunity to rectify it but I personally don't think a solenoid will resolve the issue. A quick check on CLIP would show it the solenoid is functioning correctly or not!

That's exactly what I was thinking, it's been on CLIP, had the throttle body cleaned and shows no faults.
Will have to take a day of work to try and resolve this issue.

CLIP > Live data > Parameter PRXXX "Solenoid Position" > Value = Open/Closed... if its cycling when the dephaser *should* be advancing then it is working.

I've had a 182 Cup in before with a similar dephaser like issue (that wasn't the dephaser) and it turned out to be the timing belt tensioner at fault. I believe Fred@BTM has done a fair bit of work with Gates engineers on this issue and Renault refuse to admit a fault.

Will have to bring this up Also. What causes the timing belt tensioner to fail? Is it common fault?
Thanks for taking time to reply

It is a not so common issue which is to do with the static tensioner. If the tensioners actuator/setting point goes beyond 1 o'clock the guide notch seems to hit the top of the corresponding groove in the cylinder head.

This results in a slight knocking when warm that sounds similar to the dephaser

A search of Freds posts will turn up a detailed diacussion
