Hi

Tonite ive noticed a ticking noise inside the car but i cannot hear it under the bonnet . This ticking will only come once ive been idle for about 2 mins then this noise will occur and it stays intil i rev then it goes . Ive had my dephaser and cambelt and all the aux done back in september . Had an oil change the same time . Any ideas .

does it come back after your revs have come back down?

Yes after the revs have come back down wait about 2mins and it ticks again .

As for carbon canister my old saxo used to do this . Could i block it off what does it do anyways?

Cant see why you can hear it in car and not under bonnet usually other way round :S

you can but don't block it off as it is to do with emmissions and may fail an mot also i think it will affect you're mpg

Give it a rev when warm to say 5k, the ticking should disappear back on idle, only to return in around 30 seconds

I think I have the same thing, but when I rev the engine very gently, the ticking gets faster? Does the same happen for you?

Yes fella i get this you rev the ticking will go faster then after a point it goes away then comes back . Mine has got louder though as before i hardly noticed it but now its clear

Exactly the same as mine then! Mine comes and goes, some day's it isn't there, others it's quite obvious.

I've been told it isn't dephaser, never did find out what was causing it. Because of the speeding up I assumed it was rotational.

Don't suppose you notice it goes louder with air con on (if you have it?) I have climate and if I turn it off, the ticking goes ever so slightly quieter, not sure if it's related though?

Yes dude mine does go louder with aircon . Mine seems quieter if i have over half a tank of petrol too its strange .....

Could be the aircon pump?

Possibly something on the roller, a nick in the roller, or possibly something caught on it?

I think I'll see if I can see anything on the belts, could be something there.

New charcoal cannister is no more than £50. Located in drivers wheel arch behind the bumper. The solenoids are always full of water when we've done mine!

You're sure this is the cause of the problem? Does sound like it come from that part of the car.

have you tried revving it as posted above? it will clear the ticking for a short time as mentioned, that should confirm it. As said I've had two replaced, one in a 172 and one in a 182. Pretty straight forward to replace, arch liner out job possibly bumper.... It was circa 2005 lol

hi guys mines been doing this since november when I got it, though it was dephaser but chased history up and this was done in July so can't be failing now

the tick happens when warmer, mainly on idle, speeds up with revs but strangely revs drop to idle and noise is still faster for few seconds then slows down again. Can you guys confirm it is charcol canister ?

thanks

My 182 does it too, exactly as you describe, glad to know it is just the carbon canister.
