Dephaser visual check?

  RS clio182; xv1900
Yup., another noob dephaser question!
My recently purchased '05 182 has a nicely stamped book but no receipts :( The car' s covered 58k and the late 2013 service says 56k, stamped and has 'dephaser/belts done' written underneath it. Normally I'd say no receipt = not done, but there's no receipts for anything - bought it from a dealer.

So, my (long winded) question is can a visual check determine the age/condition as it was quite recent? I'm about as mechanically minded as a sparrow so I'll get it checked if it's worthwhile!

Nope - it'll have a fairly noticeable rattle once the car is up to temperature. This should essentially be changed every 5years/72k REGARDLESS of anything.

If the book is fully stamped by garages - phone them and ask for any paper work to be re-printed and sent out!

As above call the garages who stamped the book.

If in doubt get the belts/dephaser done anyway by a specialist.

Thanks for the responses gents. I'd already thought of ringing the garage but I think the book was stamped by stevie wonder during a knee trembler, the garage name is readable (just) but the address is blurry as hell, so I'm not 100% sure on the contact number. It sounds fine at the moment with no rattles etc. So I'll probably just bite the bullet and budget getting it done at the next service anyway for peace of mind.

Google the garage name.. That aside, unless the garage that carried out the timing belt are familiar, theres a high chance the timing will be out! I'd be looking at having it done again... (Provided it was done by a non specialist of course)

You might be able to get a vague idea by the print on the aux belt as that's visible I'm sure they are stamped with different numbers depending on the year made.
Obvs this would only indicate that the aux was done but I don't know who would bother doing that without the rest?

Sorry lazy typing I mean if they've stated its had other belts and and dephaser and it doesn't sound noisy it might be a truthful claim and not just a blatant lie. Personally If I had any suspicions I'd get it re done

OK. tbh I knocked the price down due to the lack of service receipts and got a reasonable deal (I hope!) I'll get everything done in the spring to be on the safe side, it's unlikely to cover many miles until then anyway as it's a fun/weekend/project car. I was going to take it to SC Autos (formerly of Bolton, now moved nearer Manchester apparently) as my missus works in Bolton, but everyone on here seems to recommend a place in Cheshire which is a bit of a trek!
Thanks for the replies.

I'm taking mine to sc after Christmas for all the jobs to be done. They've been recommended to me as being a good place to go. They've moved to Walkden now so still not as far as others from us.
