Desktop PC memory upgrade help...

Both mine and my g/f's desktop PC's could do with some new memory, I'm not that clued up on PC's and could do with some help. I've had a look on ebuyer at the memory but it blows my mind and don't want to order the wrong type etc...

Current memory in g/f's PC:
128MB 16x16 DDR266 35122462 W17 263

This PC has 3 ports for memory, 2 are taken up so 1 is free.

Mine:
2 x 256MB DDR 266MHz CL2.5 CCTADtC037 200307 MC8VDDT3264AG - 265C1

This PC has only 2 ports for memory, 2 are taken up. So does this mean 1 will have to be replaced?

Looking for an upgrade on both PC's memory. Any links etc to other memory for straight swap on these would be great.

Thanks

Thanks for the info, are most memory the same in measurement length terms?

i.e. they're likely to fit every PC?

Ordered the memory yesterday from ebuyer and it arrived today!

Question is now, do I need to save all files/programmes etc onto a memory stick from the old current memory then copy the files/programmes etc from the memory stick to the new memory?

No. Pop the memory in and start the PC. It should pick up the new memory.

Your files are not stored on the memory.

Your files are stored on your harddrive. Memory is used as fast temporary storage, whenever you shut your pc down it empties anyway.

Technically the memory isn't emptied on shut down. The ram is volatile and needs any information in it to be refreshed every few milliseconds. As soon as you cut power to them it can no longer hold the data.

I know you were probably trying to put it into laymans terms but god damn it im gonna correct you anyway ;)

You managed to do it then bud?

Yes mate, well done the g/f's today. Opened the box up took out to 2 original 128mb sticks and inserted the 1gb, closed the box up and jobs a good un! It's damn lot quicker than before. Not sure what processor it has, which might slow it down a little? don't get me wrong it's not slow at all now, but it's not super duper quick.
