Difference between timing belt & auxillary belt?

  172 SPORT PH2
well whats the difference, i thought auxillary belt was the same , just named different?

Rang renault today, and they quoted me 738 pound for a timing belt & auxillary belt change!!! whoot!!

rang a local garage and they qutoted me 180 for the timing belt change,

im at 24k mileage, on a 02 reg, what do you reccomend i do? should i change it and if so at what mileage!?

£180 for a timing belt change on a 172? - i'll put it this way, the parts are over £250!

timing belt = cambelt connects the crank to the cams in simple terms

aux belt (auxillary) powers all the ancillaries, aircon, PAS, waterpump

  172 SPORT PH2
well the local garage quoted me 180 for the fitting if i got the parts, i work at a motor trade, so i get the belt cheap...

So its wise to change it soon then ?? my mileage is 24,556

The cambelt and aux belt are due, both due to the age. Make sure all the tensioners and idlers are done too.

Garages will give you cheap quotes thinking its only a 1.2-1.4 clio, they will soon change there mind when they have a proper look.

5years or 72K whichever comes first

I know people think you're a guru, Fred, but £250 for a cambelt and pulleys? not last time i checked 18 months ago, more like £120 for parts from Renault

How can they justify 116 quid for an aux belt! i paid a tenner for mine ( only drives the alternator tho)

Yeah, its best to get it all from renault. If you want to save a little, a motor factor can supply you with a Gates timing belt kit.

I would personally use a specialist for this job. So many people don't and then we have threads a few months later with them saying there belt has snapped etc.

Also your in the motor trade yet you don't know the difference between an Aux and Cambelt??

thinks of the "whats the most stupedest thing your dealer has ever said" topic :)

as for you belts

some one said 7h to change it??? whos doing that spanner people in min wage you can do a full head swap and service in about 3h if you know what your doing.
as for the kit its self, get the the full kits as it will pay off in the long term.
dont go to renault to have it done fgs, at a specialist will be about £400 for the lot, dont bother paying loads if it blows up you can pick another one up for 500-600, you renault people need to catch up with the vaux/ford/jap lot interms of how mutch things cost, can do a full engion rebuild for about 1k yet renault have been known to charge £700+ for a cambelt kit fitted madness. :)

Tbh mate, im full time there, and i dont wanna know the place, im a trainee plumber and so i dont need to know about cars..

But some one said we sell Gates belts, yes we do, but we also do :

SKF TIMING BELT KITS

GATES XS BELTS

AND ALSO QTB BELTS

which on of those would you pick !? :clown:

The are all probably identical, just in different boxes. The tensioners/pulleys in the gates kit are identical to the renault ones.

aaaaaaahahahahahahahahahaha

OK so you have a point on the 7 hours for a cambelt (7.2hrs renault book time) 4-5 is about right though. I wont scare you with how quick I can do one if i really go for it ;)

The rest of that statement is based on bodgery and little knowledge of the marque I'm afraid.

who the fcuk reckons they can change a cylinder head and service a car in 3 hours????

tell you what come and let me watch you do that and if you do it i'll sign my house over to you....

you'd struggle to do that on the simplist of the simple 8v pushrod engined ford ka!!!

you can do a full 20XE strip down and rebuild in a day its not my fault i am in to vauxhalls that are so easy to work on its untrue.

if you can CHANGE a head on a 172/182 in 3 hours then you're talking right out your bum flaps! you can remove the head in 3 hours, but change it and have it running again in 3 hours = no chance

why do you think it takes so long?

loom off 5, fuel line off 5, manifolds off 5, line up cambelt 3, cambelt off 5, inlet off 5, rocker cover off3, head off 5. then reverse

if you have done something a load of times over years and years you soon find the realy quick ways off doing things. + air tools which is 4tw

lol last winter i totaly striped my corsa from a running fully fitted car to a totaly bare shell in 7h (shame its takeing me 7months to get round to stich welding it :) )

if your as mad as some of us vaux lot are you can do things very quick. at TOTB last year we were doing speed box change overs between runs and all sorts.

you have blatently never touched a car before..

cleaning parts (something all half decent self respecting techs do) eats up time

gasket surfaces..

prepping head bolts

torquing a head down can take a good half hour on its own depending on how complicated the procedure is

squeezing/evacuating 16 hydraulic lifters??

sorry but you are talking b*llocks.
