Dim witted question about tyres

I am looking to buy some second hand wheels and tyres and they are quoting the debth of tread left on the wheels.... However, it occured to me I do not know how much tread a tyre will have in mm from new. I know the legal limit is that lump on the tyre which is 'around' 1.6mm()? Thanks.

Look out for perished tyres, eggs on the sidewall, tyres that have been run flat ( groove on the sidewall). Just some useful advice, sorry if you already knew that
