Disabling passenger airbags on 172 Mk1

To safely fit a baby seat in the front of the 172 I need the front passenger side airbags disabled.

Is this possible? Is it an easy/cheap job? Can they be re-enabled later on?

Any help please (before I ask my dealer!)

(and the mk1 172 doesnt have a key switch to switch them off)

It would be interesting to see if the mk2 switch can be retro fitted.

if you can get hold of the wiring diagram.......

Can you not just unplug it from under the passenger seat?

You will have to have the dash light on i think Jas.

can you not use the resistor trick that y0z used to fool the system into thinking there are airbags in the system?

This conversation was happening between a customer and the dealer when i was in the garage once.

Apparently Renault will not disable the airbag for the MK1, as it is a designed in safety feature, and sold as such. Also they will not alter the airbags on the MK1 or fit a MK2 switch, as the car has not been desinged this way, any alteration would leave Renault open to compensation claims.

He did say some backstreet garage could do it, but it would invalidate Renault warranties, and trade in values if the airbag has been tampered with.

Basically, it can be done, but Renault would not do it because of the possible compensation claims.
