Disconnecting ECU - side effects?

Should there be any noticeable side effects if i disconnect the ECU from my valver? For example, a lack of power?

it wont work without one.

they do have a memory tho,which remembers some settings, disconecting the battery for a while resets it.

Sorry, i should have made myself clearer.

I meant disconnecting the ECU and then plugging it back in afterwards.

-TA- - if the ECU lost its memory would there be a decrease in power? Does it re-learn again?

The reason i ask is because i disconnected by ECU at the weekend for a couple of hours and now the car doesn't seem as quick!

On the 172 if you disconnect it, it go to a default map, this is rewrote as it learns the engine again, so this is why it feels slower.

normaly its the other way round, pumps more fuel in, and it learns the right level from the lambda/temp/etc sensors

not sure how long it takes, it may all be in your head

I thought that, but i floored it on the way to work and watched the RPM's, they didn't seem to raise very quickly, whereas i'm sure they used to...

Hmmm, maybe it'll get quicker soon.

What's all this remapping business? Will that help the ECU get the best out of the engine? or will it learn that itself?

The ECU takes live readings from MAP IAT 02 knock oil pressure it doesnt need to re-learn its settings. The ECU contains a 'setting' for every possible situation it can encounter certain engine speed, load throttle possition etc.

So if the ECU is left out of the car for a few hours then it should be exactly the same when you put it back in? Is that what you're saying?

Even if you've plugged another ECU in whilst it was out?
