ditsributer coil failed

i have a mk1 phase 3 clio 96 (P) 1149cc. found this past couple of dayz the car has lacked power on accelaration, no change there then i hear you say...it has also been juddering on hard accelaration like i couldnt manage it. looked at it the other nite and found in the dark that i could see an ht lead end been earthed to the inner of my distributer coil (ie a little sparkin flash in time with the engine) thought it could be ht lead so swapped it with the lead next to it, did same again on the same point. went to a parts place to get new one, the guy told me i could be looking at getting one from dealer which i didnt want to do...and that it was very rare infact close to impossible that it would go wrong, got another anyway and everything is back to normal, just wondering if this is a common fault and if anyone else has had this bother. my cars done nearly 80k if thats any indication

cheers ladies and gents

its the area were the ht leads plug into round the outside...its like a plastic mold surround that the ht points are set with numbers 1-4 around the outside

not wishing to sound thick...but what is the dizzy. i know that electode coils are set in these plastic type molds so they arent damages and sealed air tight.

Oh, is this a clio II were talking about....not the old one?

If its the new one youll have a coilpack

doi!!!

you stated in the first post! MK1 lol

Iside that round plastic car is the rotor arm, it distributes the spark to each cylinder. The HT lead from the centre to a metal looking block on the nearside wing, thats the coil and ignition module assembly.

well infact the engine thats in my mk1 is the same engine they later carried on using in the early mk2s i think. i understand the princaple of the distributer but didnt understand why i was told it would be hard to get hold of and why it just happened all of a suddern. your right about the earthing into the resin but theres no evidence of cracks or imperfections with in it.

got confused reading this, but all those parts will be on the shelf in halfords... coil, dizzy, leads and rotor - you wont have any probs getting them.

I had it on my Rt years ago, going down the motorway and under acceleration it would judder then pick up... same as you. that was a dodgy lead earthing out, so basically you need to establish what bit it is and go and get the part - if you replace the dizzy cap, get the rotor arm aswell and its a simple job.

  172 cup,s2 rs turbo

a p plate 1.2 engine will a coil pack bolted to the rocker cover no dizzy.changed a few but i wouldnt say its that commen, just unlucky fella.

clio16vpaul, sorry mate but think u got wires crossed here, the distributer in mine doesnt have rotter n dizzy. just a coil in sealed housing controlled only by the ecu giving a bunch of relays signals. jay 172 sounds more like wot im i was after but never the less i hope nothing like this happens again. halfords didnt know wot the fcuk i was on about..no surprise there then.
