DIY Inlet manifold matching

So still trying to get a little bit more out of my 172 & the plan was to send the inlets off to Angle works/GDI but the turn around time is just not going to work for me as i need the car during the week plus doing this my self would be helpfull £££ wise

So basically here goes, i use my dremel alot, has been a great investment & use it enough to be very confident with it, i have done engine work before with it, only thing being it was on a 1/10 scale r/c car, but the theroy is the same lol! so my plan was to remove the manifold & use the gasket as a template, remove the gasket & carefully remove the excess ali, then move onto smoothing it into the channels then finnish off with some 800/1200 grit wet & dry to give a smooth finish but still avoiding the polished finished wich from reading on line is the worst thing you can do.. now obviously i dont expect it to have the same results as Angel works/GDI as i'm sure they have spent alot of time & effort getting the inlets as they should be but in theory providing i dont go past my markings & make it as smooth as possible air flow i should see gains right?

If any one has any input, ideas, pictures that would be ace

Dremel will be a nightmare TBH, too small for this job, it's a fine detail thing. You need a proper die grinder and grinding burrs or it will take you weeks.

Dam :dapprove: was really looking forward to attmepting this.. so no gains at all can be achived with the dremel in say a day mate? i can understand that places like your self are miles ahead of what i will ever be capable of & i'm assuming you guys go fairly deep into the inlets rather than just smooth say 1-2cm in, i wouldn't expect 10+bhp like your selfs can get but say something like 5bhp for a day of my labour i would be very happy

really you need the torque of a die grinder plus the larger burrs

It would be really hard going. A dremel is good for taking out fine imperfections in tight spaces and where you dont want to remove much material. With these manifolds, although you dont go crazy, you do need to take out a fair amount.

Dont worry about wet and dry, 80 grit cloth roll is all you need.

Dan is quite correct Andy. 5bhp is the rough gain from the inlet matching...And you do NOT notice a gain! Its all in your head. You barely notice 25bhp!

Yeah but cost vs gain its actually damn good. They used to quote 10+ bhp from a mapped inlet im sure.

Thanks for all the input guys, think i'm going to have a go! just a few questions though, i'm assuming that if i get the gasket fixed down & dead in line with the fixing holes that should give me a 99.9% marking of where i need to be then i assume i remove & smooth off as much as possible just being careful not to go to mad, also will i need to do both sides of the lower inlet manifold or is it just the side that connects to the plennum? & is it worth doing the plennum or could i make things worse, i.e. ending up with the lower inlets smaller than the plennum? but that is what i assume the problem is in the first place right?

Right then... maybe i will leave it too the pro's then... how much would i be looking at £££ wise for some one to do it & who do i send it too? the group buy sounds ace for the money but i'm too late for that one & i need this done & fitted for the surrey rolling road meet in september...

If any one can qoute me happy lol drop me a pm, would like to spend under £150 but think its going to be in the region of £180/£200
