Do induction kits really work

I have a 52 plate 1.4 16v and was looking at putting an induction kit on but wondered whether it would actually improve the cars performance at all?

in essence, no

but various people have felt that their car has performed better with an induction kit rather than the standard airbox

No but, the performance gains are minimal in comparison to the sucking noise the thing makes, that coupled with a slightly altered exhaust note, Id go for it

I recall a clio meet and a guy who was very knowledgable on induction looked at the 172 standard setup and said it was already a vey good piece of kit.

sound good. noise makes you think your going faster than you think you are!!

Had to take mine off in the end, engine management light coming on all the time and the car randomly going into limp mode. Took it off and had no problems since.

The induction kit filter element is only half the story. On its own you will make more noise but usually loose power. The other half of the story is feeding the filter with COLD AIR! With this combination some power/torque gains will be found and throttle response will be improved.

In the freezing cold my Valver feels alive with its IK. But on muggy days it feels poop - not catastrphically slower, just more sluggish.

The principle of an IK is the same as forced induction - to feed denser air. Thats about where my knowledge finishes, but I know that unless you have a sealed unit youll obviously draw in more cold air in on a cold day and more hot air on a hot day. So a sealed unit makes sense. Thats why manufacturers make airboxes.

I use an IK as I very rarely drive around town at slow speeds (no cold air being fed in) and I love the noise.

Well I removed my Viper which had no hose at the end and put the original airbox back on and the car has definetely less torque on low revs. Havent compared it flat out but plan on doing it next Friday at the drag strip.

it already has an enclosed paper element free flowing sucking x2189.

Id stick with the standard. I took the cold air pipes of mine for the noise effect and lost a race to an astra GTE 16v 2.0 mk.2(have to race him again with them on!-thatl be a conclusive test eh?). If you want noise get one, if you want a normal car just leave it standard. Even if you did gain 3 bhp or whatever they claim you wouldnt notice it anyway, you might not have had a poo that day and lose out on bhp/tonne.
