Do Renault even know what needs doing when!?

So the story goes... Picked up my 182 on friday, abs loving not a problem in sight... Until I checked the car documents. The cars done 39,000 and has had it's 36k servie at a Renault dealer I assumed of course that it will have had the aux belt included In This service especially for a cost of £500!

At the top of the document it states "36,000 mile service carried out to Renault specification" and then lists all the usual work underneath.. And yet there is no mention of the aux belt?! The service book has not had the belt section stamped either so WTF is going on? So anyway if the car has not had the belt done it is nearly 4k overdue and there's no way I'm driving it and risking disaster!

So as I sit here on the train up north with my moody bicth of a gf wineing in my ear about not being driven to Manchester I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what's happened? Also does anyone know what the belt is refferred too as on the 36k invoice?

Thanks for your help.

Aux belt isnt a big deal, if it snaps it doesnt do any damage, just get a new one and whack it on.

  RB 200 Cup!
can you not ring up the dealer that did the service -surely they can check their computer and see what exactly was done on the service

On another note, you had better hope your missus doesnt read this otherwise the couch shall be frequented by your fine self lol

  Lots of Alfas
On a 172/182 if the aux belt or tensioner goes it normally wraps itself around everything and causes a big mess with the cambelt.

When I bought my car it had the major service box ticked at 36k, when I checked with the dealer it wasnt changed or advised to be changed. So somehow it had lasted 5 years on 62k miles.

Either way if theres no noise coming from the tensioners and the belt is in good condition I dont think theres too much harm driving it until its been done. Theres a lot on here that get away with a lot more than 3000miles.

My 182 is about to hit 46k, in the service book it's just stamped with the mileage and date, no sign of what has actually been done? I guess this is something I should be checking up on also then!?

Thanks for your help guys, sure enough I phoned the dealers in notts and they had 'misread' renault guidlines- I pretty much said to the guy are you fukcing kidding me!? But he was very apologetic ad has offered to do it for a reduced price so that's all good:)

With regard to the 'disaster' that could have occured if I drove it I'm so pleased I didn't bring it up north, search aux/cambelt on this forum and there are too many tales of disaster when thing snap etc to risk driving it.

Yes mate I most def would look into it, I abs love my new car and would be truely broken (def financally) if it was to go and then take the cambelt with it!

LOL your right mate! It's quite funny she, didn't want me to buy a loud car, so whenever she's with me I have too keep the revs below 3k as it does tend too make a bit of noise what with the mods etc!

You ought to try telling that to the 182 owner over on renaultsport, aux belt went after four years and 24k, just been presented with a bill for £4600+ by Renault.

So you where charged £500 for the 36k service that didn't include the aux belt , now they say they do it at a reduced rate ? :S

The price of £500 should have " included " the aux belt being changed . You need to get back onto the dealer and tell them you've already paid the amount to include the aux belt .

Bang on mate, exactly why forums like this are handy- there's always someone who knows what's going on, saying that there are some people ^^ who don't!!

Damn I wish buying the car hadn't put me into debt lol :clown: gonna have to get saving and get the swap and service in 2k or so I guess... I will phone the garage that done it before to double check though.

Would you say that most people, in general, get the belts changed at their 36k service!?

There has been some debate about this over on CT as there seems to be no definitive answer with even Renault service departments giving conflicting info. I can't see Reno making any change to their stance either as it would probably make them liable. I think the crucial thing is the age regardless of whether you've done 36 or lower best to ere on the side of caution.

Tbh mate on the 182 I don't think it is a matter of preference, it should be done and it states it In my service guide thingy. I can't speak for other clios but I'm just so glad I spotted it and not risked driving it.

Had the same problem when we bought the Trophy earlier this year. It had 37k on the clock, had the 36k service done by a different dealership prior to my dearlership taking it on who hadn't changed the belt.

All sorted though free of charge:)

I did an aux belt on friday and once i had it off the owner asked me what condition it was in, so i bent it back on itself and showed him the extensive cracking and how dry it was. It had done 36k almost exactly and is on a 55 plate. it definitely NEEDED to be done

My personal opinion is to do it every 3 years even if the milage isn't covered in this time

Most of the dealers haven't a clue about the 36k service, or any other service for that matter. I went through all this recently. Most kept saying "no sir, the timing belt doesn't need changed until 72k", they didn't understand what I meant by aux belt at all. I must have spoken to around 4 dealerships, only 1 seemed competent. Thanks to forums like this, I'm a bit more informed. It makes me wonder, if I were Joe Public and just did what the dealership told me, would Renault replace my engine under warranty when the belt snapped? They also didn't have a clue about service intervals, oil type, filters, or what needs done in general. It seems to me that buying a second hand RS is russian roulette, who knows how it's actually been serviced over the years :S

Pretty sure Renaut dont change the Aux belt @ 36k.......its not in thier service schedule iirc? Its only people on here who do (me included). Its good practice.

It is in the service book the original phase 1's weren't to be chnaged till 72k with the belts but there were so many claims that it got changed but often the delaers don't know as they remember the old rules.

My service book for the 182 states that the accessories belt and pulleys should be changed at 36k or 5 years .

  Coilovered Clio Dynamique
My sisters 206 GTi is a 2002 with 72k and has never had any belts changed and its last service was in 2004 at 42k which involved an oil change, filters and spark plugs, and it still runs like a dream and sounds better than my car which has 29k

Right - got the car booked in at a great local garage for a cost of £153 which I am pleased with, and I'm driving my gf's rather shockingly horrible Hyundai (what a piece of sh*t, honestly I know french cars do not have world beating build quality but seriously try driving a Hyundai, its actually hard too tell if it is in first or fith the gear box is so faque!!) I tell you what though, I do enjoy driving it for all the wrong reasons: 1) Cheap rock hard tyres make it great fun round corners, 2) lack of a rev counter makes finding the limiter all the more fun!

Anyway back to the topic at hand - its turns out the previous owner actually asked the renault dealer not to do it! I couldnt believe it, and too make it worse it was a completely uninformed decision on his part, he had no idea what he was risking!

Strangely enough when I started the other day I noticed a faint squeaking kicking in when the engine is revved gently and left to drop off - I'd bet my bottom dollar its the tensioners on their way out :S

Danny - seems you actually handle these things - why is it the aux belt wears out quicker than the cambelt - is it smaller/weaker? Whats your expierence in terms of cambelts, is the 5 years Renault recommend ok or are they looking a little sketchy by that point?

thanks for everyones help.
