Do you ever clean your PC?

I couldn’t imagine until now, how a PC that has never been cleaned looks. Fortunately, we can have a look.... just combine a lot of PC usage with no desire for cleaning and you’ll get the following result:

You'd be surprised the amount I've opened up to work on for people that are like that (not quite THAT bad however), all that sh*t makes the pc run slower too.

It's even worse if its a pc thats been in a room where people smoke too :dead:

I cleaned the work server, it had almost an inch of dust at the bottom of the case! The outher grills were clogged with crap, it was a mess.

+1 even though none of our PCs are over 4 years old, i've seen worse than that ^ not nice.

It's definately worth doing your best to clear as much crap as you can, especially the fans and heat sinks.

If your worried about static, wear a couple of elastic bands round your wrists and take the fans out and clean them. Although I wouldn't worry to much. I use the dyson attachments to clean mine, lol

Don't use any chemicals on the inside, just a clean duster or kitchen roll for the case inside/out and hoover the rest.

As for the keyboard, take a picture of it or make a note of the layout, then pop all the keys off, leave them to soak for 20 minutes, hoover/wipe down the rest of the keyboard while you wait, then dry each key individually and pop them back taking extra care with the space bar, return key and shift keys because they usually have metal rods attached to them.

I clean mine every few months or so. But WOW, those images are horrific, my PC almost died showing them. That must have been left for years & years. Best to keep it clean, so that it runs as it should.

Mine lives in a cubby hole and with unsufficient ventilation. Therefore i have the side pannel removed. I cleaned it yesterday as i built my new one, heres my heatsync, this is 2 months worth of dust since i last cleaned it.

I have actually seen worse in my time.

Used to work for a company where I was replacing old EPOS PC's from GAME with brand new ones and some of these PC's were there since they were Electronics Boutique from like a decade ago.

And OH MY GOD, opening some of them up was so f**king gross.

I have the same cooler but have never managed to take the fan off. Do you just pull on it?

Yer, you see the 2 rubber nipples on the top part mate ?

Just pull the top half. Then when it comes to putting it back on, youll have to use your fingers to pull the rubber nipples back through the hole, youll see when you do it.

My older PCs used to get dirty as hell inside. In my current apartment though, with clean wooden floors and not much dust allowed to settle, the machine sucks in cleaner air. I also have a better case now though too, with intake filters. It's also important to have slight negative pressure in the case too - in other words more exhaust than intake. This way any dust that finds its way in, will most likely be pushed out again before it can settle and build-up.

Used to do mine quite often but cant be assed anymore not done it for 3 years. Its got a side window tho so if I notice the fans getting clogged up I'll do it.

I tend to wipe the intake filters out every couple of months. Probably once a year I bring the PC into work as we've air-lines on the shop floor with PSI that's not stupidly high.

Always looks sparkly clean inside after a good blast-out.

I have seen some truly horrid PC internals with People who smoke. The smell of it and also the tar that coats all the components. Funny how people dont get thats what coats your lungs LOL

Once I fried a processor, it was a pre-built computer which I never had opened the case. Upon inspection I found around the processor fan to be a big rubber tube going from the processor to a case vent. This had filled with crap and caused the high temps causing my processor a heated death!!

So now I don't give it a massive clean but enough to make sure everything is proper temps.
