Only the oil every 6k now, Ive done it in the past holding the receipts etc and found i couldnt sell the car on as easily, my last car i had to P/X to a garage i couldnt shift it :(

Obv i had the cambelt done by a garage because people will look for that

  Audi A3 TDI 170 B.E.
If the car wasn't under warrenty I would change oil and plugs etc.

May do CAm belt but never kept a car long enough.

I get my trusted garage to do my services. I get good prices and my service book stamped, which in my opion is a must if I ever want to sell her. I will be booking her into Rentech for her cam belt change too.

  Lots of Alfas
I always service my own car because I know that its been done properly and I actually enjoy doing it. I try to do everything except for the cambelt. I service my brothers clio and my gf's suzuki too.

I keep the receipts for everything I buy, even for the oil etc, and my local renault dealer puts my name and reg plate on all part receipts.

i do too,i keep all my reciepts but i work in a dealership so i have an advantage too (ie tools, ramps etc)

Exactly my advantage. Work in a dealer. Tools, ramps...free oil!!:approve:

The cambelt was done at Rentech as will any other major work.
I changed my rear shocks, a lower arm and pretty much anything else i have been capable of doing.

I can see the want to have a nice tidy stamped service history but to be honest i'd be crazy to pay hundreds of pounds for work that costs me about 10 quid in parts (like an oil and filter change) and that i can do myself.
As long as the receipts are kept, and genuine parts are used, i don't really see much difference.

hit the nail on the head mate

id be happy to buy a car from someone like yourself

Does FSH have any effect on something like P/X valuation ? Would you really lose £xxxx on the sale from not having FSH compared to what you save by doing it yourself ? Last time I P/X a car they asked if it had FSH, I did, but they never even checked or looked.

I dont think it matters TBH you can tell them as many lies as you want when P/Xing they genereally send them straight to auction unless they think they can make something on them, I px'd my 98 GTi6 a month ago, Its the most reliable car ive owned theres nothing wrong with it ;) It drank oil like a fish drinks water

my mate services my car - trade prices on parts and mates rates for fitting got all the reciepts here even for the daftest wee thing like a bulb all held in a file, dont know about selling them on all my cars have been PX and the service history has never been a problem

  BMW M135i
Everything, don't trust garages as far as I could throw one. Its not their car so they won't really give a f**k like you do when its your own car and you want it doing right (imo).

just done my own oil change......and it is Sunday afternoon.

You don't get that service from Reno

i service my own and will happily do anything with the suspension or brakes (in particular) but would rather entrust an indie specialist with jobs like the cambelt.

as said, it's peace of mind and a significant saving - it's also a really good way to get to know your car - not always a good thing though!

i've drawn up a tick-box service schedule listing all of the individual jobs and when they're due (cribbed from the Renault schedule + some extra bits that i think are sensible) and will document the services i do fully and include genuine parts receipts.

it may well make it more difficult to sell on and reduce its value but that value is dropping daily anyway and will go the way of every other cheap French car.

just bought a 172FF about 2 weeks ago. the service book only has the first stamp in it. It was owned by a guy who worked at renault (think he was/is the service/parts manager) so all the work was done at mates rates, dunno why he didn't get the book stamped as well. as the car is a 51 plate and only has the first stamp do you reckon its worth getting the work from now on done at a garage?
I know my way around an engine (worked on a few cars in the past and most recently rebuilt a renault 5 gt turbo engine from scratch) and would be happy to take on any service work however just wondering whether its worth it going to a garage to get the stamps?

sorry for the hijack:eek:

Errr, no. Sod trying to work on it !

I do check the oil & levels, plus tyre pressures once a week etc, but that's it.

Yep.

Done everything on mine with my old man who's got reasonable general mechanical knowledge, barring cambelt which is the only thing I've had to pay service for, so far.

I couldn't afford to throw it at Reno' and say smoothen the cracks :S

i don't think anyone's going to be able to answer that unfortunately - it's impossible to assess how much more your car might be worth second-hand with a full dealer service history vs. what you might save by servicing it yourself (or by having it serviced at an indie specialist). if you're already missing service stamps and you're happy servicing it yourself, i'd do that myself

I personally think a full Renault service history is not all its cracked up to be. If i was to purchase a car 2nd hand and looked at the service history and see it had all its services from say Mark Fish, i think thats worth 10 Renault servide historys IMO. Thats obviously for people in the know! Im probably capable of doing my own service, but id leave it to the experts. tyre pressure checks and water and oil top ups are the extent of my after care.
