does anyone's power steering pump whine like a b*&ch!!

  clio 172
Hi just wondered if anyone else seems to have a whining power steering pump on a 172?
mine is really noisy on full lock and when cornering hard around, roundabouts.
My steering seems to be ok and im not losing any fluid, is this normal for the 172? i have heard that the mini cooper s, are also very noisy, my 172 is now on 60000 miles i have had the waterpump, cam/auxbelt and all the pulleys changed about 10000 miles ago but the pump has always been loud since i brought it 3 years ago 27000 mile ago.
do you think its on its way out or is this noise normal?

thanks si

No it's not normal unfortunately. I had the same when I had my 172. Needed a new pump. Was silent after.

They're not cheap either, about £380 from Renault I think. Luckily I managed to get a used one.

Mine never gave up over the time it was whining, but I noticed the steering was MUCH lighter after fitting the new pump lol.

if they pullley sheers, game over! 99% of aux belts take the cam belt with them!

hi ben i had the waterpump changed recently at hillpower as that was making a right noise, Nick did notice that the power steering pump was loud but said that the alternator and power steering pump pulleys looked ok. Do you think this is something i can just put up with or do you think it is essential to change? im driving to spain in june and dont want any f*&k up's LOL!!

They can/will whine on low speed manuvering due to a restrictive return line, theres a renault techinical note on it about a replacement part if you'd have taken it in under warrenty when it had it.

But shouldn't whine all the time, although if its been the same for 3 years and never got any worse i'd debate changing it.

thanks for your help mate

it mainly only whines from cold like you said on low speed manuvering
and when i go around roundabouts fast LOL!!
plus i live on a very steep hill and have to turn around daily this probably isnt helping my cause!!

I could hear mine over the engine on roundabouts and winding roads. No way was I taking any chances, not when it's something that could endanger lives.
