Does your sport sound like a diesel :-(

Recently my 172 with only 28,000 miles is sounding like a diesel when ideling and at low speed around town......

Ive checked cam belt and there was no evidence of deterioration which was to be expected seems these are up for a change at 90,000 miles and the cam belt tension seemed to be correct.

Then removed the auxiliary belt the noise was absent with the belt off, no roughness could be felt in any of the auxiliary component bearings although lack of space makes it diffcult to spin them.

I did read somewhere that someone had an auxiliary belt tensioner bearing replaced, has anyone else had this done? or is something completely different?

If anyone can help it would be appreciatied as I fear that a trip to the dealer could be very expensive.........

i must admit, at idle mine sounds a bit tappety and at about 2.5k, as well. After that it seems ok. Oh well...one year down, two to go...

Mine sounded like a diesel once - i had the following stuff done to it:

Replace alternator belt - £61.20

Replace expansion chamber? - £36.30

Sounds ok now, that was about 5k miles ago at 17k

Since me zorst is rattling like feck mine sounds like a diesel on steriods!!

I had problmes with me tensioner bearing failing, made a high pitched whining noise and i had to have the tensioner, bearing, alternator and belt replaced - took 3 weeks, very unhappy man!! :(

Also the noise is still there (tho much quieter) and the man at REN said, i quote "its meant to make that noise!" - HMMMMMMMMM
