Been tinkering a bit more.
Interior roof console swapped over to a none sunroof version. Infra red sensor cover cracked, so need a new one of those. Immobiliser works perfectly now it’s dry all the time with the dreaded sunroof finally gone.

More interior bits went in to fully finish off the interior. I am missing one plastic strip insert on the front seat belts sliders that are on the B pillar. I am pretty pleased that every other little cover and cap I seem to have.

All my grab handles are back on the roof as well but didn’t photo that.

I gave the car a good layer of wax rather than the spray ceramic coat and then I finally managed to complete the appearance of this Valver that I was going for, when some Willy wheels came up for sale that I had been waiting for. I originally wanted to have Willy wheels refurbed in silver but when I saw a set like this come up for sale in anthracite with a diamond cut lip a while back, I didn’t have the funds at the time. I thought this will look better than silver and especially gold on this black car. Anyway, another set came up for sale in the north east and I quickly headed up there to purchase them.

Been tinkering a bit more…

Using the clio throughout the summer a lot. I couldn’t do anything last winter as was working on another project. I’ve been really a pleased with how the Clio has been and nothing needs doing so I’ve just been taking the opportunities to just enjoy it. Lots still to do though, in due course…

Wheels had a crap refurb Carried out on them so I had to put them right. I went for powder coating silver. Not a fan of dark wheels much although I did like the anthracite with cut lip. I prefer silver though and especially on a black car. Centre caps from young timer.

IMG_0573.jpeg

correct plastic cover for the seatbelt nut fitted in grey. Not happy I posted a pic with a black one fitted. 😝 I finally got hold of the plastic insert trim for the seat belt slider. Riveting updates these…

IMG_0580.jpeg

rear seats are fine, front seats are shocking though. This Clio certainly had a smokers package or should I say tokers package

Got to have the foam replaced and re trim the front seats at some point. The burn mark on the glove box door also has been replaced.

The service history is excellent. One of the previous owners even has kept flyers from club nights he went to and this Clio must have been the vehicle of choice for the designated driver lol. Those were the days lol 😂

Passenger side electric window needs fixing, I have a spare motor and mech so will do that and take the rear beam off this winter for a refurb. I think someone on the fb group does an exchange so going to do that. I hope all goes well unbolting the rear beam from the floor. If I get time I will get stuck into stripping the front subframe off then and crack on with restoration.

I also need to convert the wiring loom in the front bumper to have the connectors on for the R5 fog lights and I have sourced new side lights for the front but I need to source new headlights to really finish off the brand new appearance on the outside. Young timers only have LHD headlights.

111k now, 4 owners. I hope you have enjoyed reading my tame updates. I will get back in my box now!

Cheers 👊

I would like to have a go in a fully converted mk1 to mk2. If I do the conversion with at least the front and rear hubs and wishbones and sus etc I would never convert it back again I’m sure. I had a titanium 182 years ago and like this equally if not more. I enjoy this for what it is for a good b road and lane blast. Although the F7 is a little slower it’s still a great engine.

Just read the whole thread. Madness lobbing a roofskin off though lol.

Love that you saved it.

I don’t miss it. Always damp and water inside the car. It’s an improvement.

Been tinkering with the Clio again….

I decided to go for the front subframe refresh first rather than the rear beam.

It has been fighting me nearly every step of the way. Seized and corroded bolts. Pleanty of blow torch and hammering needed. This is just the start.

The Ball joints were a b*****d also. Anyway after removing the exhaust and dog bone and a bracket at the front of the subframe plus disconnecting the power steering and steering rack bolt to the column I could finally start dropping the frame. Thanks for the advice on dropping the frame on another thread. Luckily I got the subframe bolts out without having to cut them.

Power steering pipe and gear linkage were a pain. I didn’t want to remove the gear linkage arm for obvious reasons with the realignment afterwards so this made it very difficult to manoeuvre the frame. I had 3 trolley jacks on the go at one point. The power steering hose would never be able to come of without actually removing the rack either as the whole hose had to be rotated to unscrew it from the rack end yet on the pump side it has a nut that can be screwed on/off? Weird. I have found a company online that make power steering hoses inbetween brum and cov so I am going to see if they will make me a new one. The rack will get sent away for a refurb also. I am keeping power steering as this will predominantly be a road car.

Next challenge track rod ends, I still cannot get the bloody things off…

It is going to have to get sent back with them still attached. They are seized solid. I wanted to count how many turns to remove them so I can screw the new ones back on the same amount but I will just have to keep these images for a reference of how many threads are on show instead 👌😂
IMG_2698.jpeg

A much more pleasing part of the refresh is a unicorn find from FB with some very nice front seats without hot rock burns!

IMG_2458.jpeg

Of course there had to be more drama with swapping the frames over from my old seats onto these.

There is always at least one bolt that gives you grief with every job is the pattern that is merging with this. This one bolt sapped my time again but the giant ugger dugger with bolt remover luckily gripped it and got it off. Any way seats now in and back on with the front end.

Well sort of. Heat shields need refurbing and of coarse another broken bolt! How is best to refurb these heat shields? Plus fix this broken bolt in the shield?

The rad has to come out now so I can gather the last few items for the powder coasters. I need to jurist, prime and paint the chassis next. Order a new Ali rad with a new fan are eBay ones the only option? I hope the quali and fit will be ok and the fan fits the fan mounting bracket etc.

How do I get these 3 nuts off the fan mounting frame as they just turn and there is nothing to grip them on the other side. I Can’t wait for the build up phase but all I can see is work everywhere that needs to be done and I am trying to not get overwhelmed. I need to get the rad back in a coolant filled up though because I don’t like to leave and engine sitting with no coolant in for long. The coolant was pristine that came out as well.

Gear linkage - Remove the whole thing, it's only connected at the bottom of the gearstick by a single 13mm nut. It's also really easy to damage when you're fiddling with the subframe as it's only a thin walled hollow tube, plus you'll have a good opportunity to fit new bushes to the bottom of the gearstick

Heatshields - stick them in the shot blast & powdercoat pile, I had mine done in silver

Track rods/ends - You could have just chopped those off to save all that hassle 🤣 But as you've got the rack off now, just buy some new inner track rods as they do wear out and they are an utter utter c**t to do them on the car, you just need to pop the rubber boots off and you've got the easiest access you'll ever have to just undo them.
With them off in that state it'll be easy to use them as a reference to adjust to the new ones to the correct length plus you can ignore all the crap about the different lengths that are listed (different makes do them in different lengths) for them, just look to make sure the thread size is correct for the new ends you've got and you're laughing

Rad fan nut/stud - Tough choice with that tbh, I've never had one do that to me so don't really know what would work best but my 1st thought would be to put a few tack welds on the back to hold it in place, add some more heat & try to undo it with an impact gun or the alternative would be drilling it out & figure out finding & fitting a replacement.

As for putting the rad back in, there's no way I'd do that until it's absolutely necessary for running the car because not having it there makes life so much easier when working inside the engine bay. Not having any coolant in the engine for a long while isn't going to hurt anything either

Thanks for this advice again, it is much appreciated! I am unsure whether to send the rack to the refurb place in Wakefield as they said they wouldn’t replace my track rods which I found strange. I want to refresh it totally. The power steering hose place say they refurb racks or send them somewhere on there site so I am going to have to check.

Once I get the rad fan bracket off and the petrol fume canister and horn mount bracket out from under the front arch I will be ready to send everything to the powder coaters then. I think!

This is what I am looking at buying. Not sure if the fan will just bolt straight on to the standard bracket. Also the the inlet outlet says 38mm 32mm and all the other rads listed say 32mm 32mm. Mine measures 32mm 32mm. 38 sold though so must be ok for valver Williams crew? I’m a bit concerned about the 38mm measurement and where they get that from though. 16V and Williams radiators are all the same aren’t they?

That sounds normal to me tbh, they're only going to be doing internal hydraulic stuff on the rack and cleaning up the outside to refurb it so stuff attached to the outside of it is only going to end up in the bin

That actually looks surprisingly decent, I've not seen any of the ally rads that have got the holes drilled into it for fitting the standard fan brackets to before.

Williams & Valver rads are the exact same part
