dot5 abs compatibility?

I boiled by brake fluid yesterday (apart from the awful smell) the brakes are now spongy. I have been reading about and lots of sites say that DOT5 will not work with ABS. How can this be true? Can anyone recommend the best fluid for a 197 ? Make and rating?

Do not use DOT5! DOT4 or DOT5.1 is what you want and both of them work with ABS/ESP!

thanks Mr Pink i'll ask the garage to get 5.1 put in then. I assume its OK to ignore the fluid cap saying saying use dot4 only?

5.1 is a "modified" 4, with a higher boiling point. DOT4 is fine aswell and a bit cheaper.
