Driving in Snow

  Seat Leon FR Tdi
Just discovered how crap the clio 182 is in the snow. Anyone got any suggested driving tips??? Even pulling away in second gear the car was wheel spinning for fun, ended up getting stuck on a hill and had to turn around to go back down it. What made things worse is a 1litre corsa went motoring past me with and the driver had an amused smile on his face.

I'd turn the ESP off otherwise that will try and stop the wheels spinning, my understanding is its like traction control which is shite in snow/ice.

Yep found that out too, esp is useless in the snow. It just seems to get rather confused and makes strange noises lol

It just s.s.s.s.st.st.stutters.

I can't think what else you could do other than pulling away real slow in 2nd (3rd would probably need some major clutch slippage to get going). Only thing I can think of is stay at home? (helpful I know lol!)

I was following a bog std Punto on the way home last night, and I couldnt keep up with it!

Nearly couldnt get up the hill just before my house either, I was lucky to get up it at all. I thought ESP would help but based on my experience last night and what you lot are saying, obviously not.....

Big fat low pro tyres are s**t in the snow, what you need is some skinny studded tyres.

EDIT: b*****d beat me to it, lol

try letting your tyres down a bit? drag racers let their tyres down to increase the footprint and it seems to work

go find yourself a big empty car park with loads of snow and ice and have some fun. Just get some speed up and brake hard. Use the hand brake if its slippery enough.

Really taught me how the car handles in ice and it does make you think twice about how you would react if it happened on the road for real. It's supprising how quickly you first hit the brakes and turn away from a skid... You instinctivy do everything your not supposed to do even though you've been told a 1000 times not to do it.

Would love a go on a skidpan now to improve my awareness.

I went for a drive around the Peake District in mine amongst all the snow on Tuesday and to be honest I didn't have any problems at all with the ESP. It seemed to be working really well with the snow. Saw the light flashing away quite a bit at times but it didn't bog me down. The Clio seemed to cope much better in the snow than my last car, a 206 GTI.

My cup was absolutely dump in the snow! really really struggled to get up a hill coming from newcastle.....its the first time ive ever held anything up!!!!

the williams has no such problems in the snow. lol.

It's all about throtle/clutch balance. I have a 182 and no problems whatsoever. The muppet in a Freelander in front was not able to move. Road blocked so I got in his car and it went fine. No cars are so bad they can't be driven, it's the driver not being able to drive IMHO.

I can see so many drivers trying to accelerate with too heavy a right foot. No right foot is necessary.

People should learn to drive on these dangerous roads

I'd like to see your throttle/clutch balance going up the big hill i have to go up when all the snows been compacted then frozen into sheet ice . Its impossible to get up .You get half way then slide back down . But i've seen poxy little fiestas with skinny tyres get up it no problem.

i did a driving course a few years ago with the marines up in the artic circle low revs high gear is the key to driving on snow so soon as you spin your whells your fu*ked you anit going nowhere.
and for stopping you need to do a thing called cadents braking thats lots of little skids sort of what yor abs does
ive had no problems with my 182 yet in the snow if your driving on pure snow just let you tyre presures down a couple of psi its worked for me.

oh and if it ice your drining on your fu*ked just go home !

Thats why im quite pleased my cars safely parked on the driveway, at least that way no idiot is going to plough straight into it.
