dumd question: what are service plugs?

mechanic said my service plugs are ruined, well he used the F-word.. what are they? (was doin my dephaser)

also my rocket cover gasket has a bad leak, how hard is this to do?

I presume he means the caps that go over the holes that you use to lock the cams.

He clearly doesn't know what he's doing, if he did he would know that they are a service item that need to be replaced at the same time as you replace the timing belt and auxiliary belt.

you just use sealant on the rocket cover

F4R timing belt changes are better left to the specialists, no matter how good the reputation of said mechanic is.

a cambelt yes! he is a vauxhall specialist... but he must know somethin about nothin if he knew he needed "special" tools.. advice im after, not i told you so!

Wasnt getting at that mate soz, ask him just to recheck the timing. I did my own a while back and ran in to loads of problems. After i finished it i was up on power due to the fact my timing was out before i started but didnt know cuz the car run fine

Stephen, you live in Liverpool. There are plenty of specialists out there that are cheap. Why bother going elsewhere and risk mullering your engine?

Yes, normally its by reading the actual repair manual and not looking at the process on AutoData (Which is wrong).

The "timing plugs" as you call them are but two parts of many which must be replaced under the parts repacement scheme on the F4R engines. Its essential these parts be changed as they are stretch components and the seals are there for a very long time so its best they be replaced even if your current ones look okay. I'm not kicking the teeth in of your man as I don't do that but you asked the question and this is where a so called "Specialist" in other areas will normally come un-done against an actual Renault Specialist as the F4R's are quirky units to work on. Whilst the process is fairly simple when read on paper you wouldn't belive how many we put right after other people have had a go and fudged them up making the car seem under powered, drinking fuel and generally being shite to own.

These cars are french, and everyone knows what that means in terms of build quality and reliability...

They have got a fair whack of power out of these engines but you need to look after them with regular oil changes and maintenance. A lot of things are the same/similar to the lower powered clios but the engine is totally different so why would you not push the risk aside and get someone who knows these engines inside out to work on it? It may cost slightly more but they have a passion for these cars, and the engines are far more technical than some others. I live very close to Danny @ 519 and im lucky for that, any problems and i would always take it to him, fair priced and very knowledgable towards these cars.

the text message said it needs a service, the plugs are f*cked.. well it never, but thats what it was menta say.
