duplicating key

I've just bought an '02' clio that came with one key. I've got myself a second hand '02' renault clio plip from ebay, and have now been told that the key has a one shot chip, in that it cannot be re programmed to another cars ECU...

Is this true, or are there ways around it?

Think you'll need the engine number.
