E21 paint issue.

So, yesterday while working on the E21, I noticed that there was some cloudiness to the roof of the car, upon closer inspection, it appeared to be "bubbling" or "blistering".

I then looked around the car, and found patches of it in a few different places, the worst being this:

Naturally, I'm gutted, but I was wondering if anyone on here might know what it is?

The guy who painted it said he would come down one night this week, as a matter of urgency, so he seems concerned, but I'm worried he might claim it's something I've done.

The roof is 40-45% covered in the same sort of blistering, although not all of it is as bad as this.

Oh dear...

The paint is reacting. I'm really sorry mate but if that's all over the car it's going to need to be stripped back again, and re done!

Ffs. :-(

Its not necessarily a case of them not cleaning the panel properly before paint. Could be many things causing it, even something like moisture in the airline when it was being painted. It's nothing you've done though as it'll be coming from underneath the paint outward like rust does.

Unfortunately it's going to need repainted, no two ways about it.

One step forward, two steps back :(

He should be coming round in the next couple of days to have a look and decide what's going to happen next.

Moisture in the paint, on the panel, wet spot of primer..., loads of things can cause it.

Unfortunately for your guy he's going to have to repair it for you FOC. If he cares about his rep obviously.

He hasn't done anything wrong necessarily, but it needs sorting. Otherwise in 12 months time it will start peeling off in sheets!

  A special one.
That looks like Mirco blistering. This can be caused by moisture still in the prima, which is like a sponge.
When the prima is wet flatted and then not given enough time to dry out before being painted or the car has been left in a damp workshop or left outside and not dryed (put in the oven) before being painted.

Yes its a kick in the nuts mate but on the up side its not your fault so its not going to cost you a penny.

Cracking car, love it...

Just looking at the bonnet, probably me. Hard to explain, just the finish you usually get after putting a couple of thin layers on.

Absolutely gutted for you mate :(
Love this project so much. Shame you've started putting a lot of it back together but better to catch it now than in a month or two when it's more complete

That's the rear quarter/bootlid to start with ;)

I wouldn't know in all honesty, the depth and clarity in the flesh is fantastic, so I'd expect it's okay, it's probably the iPhone camera maybe?

Anyway yeah, everyone keep everything crossed that it's solved without too much pain :)

Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no!!!!!

No cool dude, really not cool, and you've even started fitting the glass etc.

As said, it can be anything from contaminants on the panel, moisture on the panel or in the paint line, even the bodywork being damp/cold.

Hope you get it sorted with minimal hassle, but it's gutting to see a setback like that.

My original target was about 3 1/2 weeks from now.

That's gone, so now the new target is BMW Festival @ Gaydon, and Trax with CS.

I'll probably keep going, get it driveable, then get him to spray it with most of the car finished, essentially a blow over.

I'm not taking it all apart again.

Id have to take it apart again, it just wont be the same..:(

If you where closer id come and do it for you....lol

Left and right rear quarter.

40% of the roof.

Small section on the bootlid behind the BMW badge.

That's all I've found at the moment, naturally my concern is that is might come up elsewhere at a later date.

Tbh, frightening you isn't going to help matters.

Your man may look at it and have it sorted with minimal fuss within a week.

(He may also say he wants the car stripped back down and want to start again...)

Id strip it tbh, nothing worse that seeing a paint/masking line how ever good you are at masking you will see it.

Also if he has to paint the 1/4s then i guess he will have to blend into the doors, anyway your guy will tell you what needs to be done when he sees it.

Good luck mate. :)

Howdy, IMO its all got to come off, its either water in the base coat (water based), water in the primer (after wet sanding), solvents trapped in the base coat (solvent pop) or some kind of paint reaction. Either way its all go to come off.........pop a blister see if anything comes out of it.

I did that, and it was dry, nothing happened, just flaked off?

More oddly, the blistering has partly gone down when I checked it last night.

Yep it will be very pressure / damp dependant, up and down......my supra that we are redoing from scratch in my project thread has the same,....it went back to the shop that did it for water blisters (much bigger ones than urs)...they redid the bits that were showing up, but it started to show in other places months on. No way of getting rid 100% unless you start over , all over.
