easiest way to decat standard pipe on clio dci

  clio 1.5 dci 80
got clio dci80 looking at decatting the standard system. easiest and quickest way to take it off and gut it?

  Astra GSI, 172, Golf
they sound pretty good decatted... ( with the right exhaust).. mine sounded like a reno 5 turbo.

its a pig to remove

get a jack under the engine ( belts side)
remove engine cover + steel or plastic charge pipe
remove belts side engine mount
use a long extension to push the engine towards the front and hold it there.
unbolt decat.

then you need to cut a square into the cat ( particulate filter for the picky members), remove all the honey comb style filling. then reweld the square back into position. then refit etc etc

Wouldn't bother personally. It's built into the manifold so cannot be removed, you could obviously start ripping bits out, but you're just going to hurt the resale value. Who wants to buy a 100hp diesel that won't pass an MOT?

surely if you cut a hole in it and rip out the inside it will sound really tinny ? with my 1.2 16v i cut the cat out and welded in a section of pipe. decated dervs do sound good

no its not? or atleast not on any of the ones ive saw?

i wouldnt recomend gutting the standard one, the standard particle filter is a weird shape, much better gains to be had from getting a custom decat made

Diesels don't need cats to pass MOTs

It will pass its MOT though.

Hello everyone first post on this forum.
I just joined because i will be needing more advice for my Clio Dci 65.
However i read on here 6 months or so about this mod and how to do it.. and did it!

So yes my first post is here and its to say that for me it was well worth it!

I removed the cat, had it cut open as described, by someone who knew what they were doing, the honeycomb stuff removed. And...
It was full of black solid restricting soot honey!
All you need to do is hold it towards the light and you can see why this evil thing will be restricting your poor car! Making it less eco friendly!! More expensive to run.. And slower!!
My car had done about 150,000km at this point, imagine that many km's of soot build up?!! get that **** out!

After starting the car and driving down the road for the first time after decatting, it felt much much better, smooth power with no flat spots and more torque, i was worried about any sound difference, i decatted my b18 eg civic back in the day and it made your ears bleed.. But i prefer silent stealth power these days and this was no problem..
Theres no real noise increase, it just sounds better.. theres slightly more whistle from the turbo (shes free to breath now!), which again sounds better, you couldnt even hear it before!

After testing her gently i wanted to pull away with more purpose to see what if anything would come out of the exhaust.. 2nd,3rd gear to 4000rpm
And wow  ! i wished id thought about filming it because all i could see behind me was black!!
I was worried but my friend had told me it might happen if there was alot of buildup in the manifold, turbo etc...
After doing this a few times it was smoke free and to my pleasure all the gains i had noticed already were now enhanced further!

I fitted a k&n panel filter the week after and again i noticed a difference.. i have done over 20,000km since and no problems.. other people i know with dci's dont beleive its a 65, everyone thinks ive got a dci 100 engine in there!

Just do it! you wont be dissapointed! unless you enjoy having less power and spending more money! Duh!!! :dead:

Thumbs up for my first post?

Hello RAZ
lol for the tractor! theres lots of them here.. i live in the middle of nowhere in france! They wake me up all the time!
I prefer to be as quiet as possible now, its a good idea round here or you draw unwanted attention on yourself fast!

But i am very interested in modding my dci as fast as possible on my limited budget, im isolated out here and the local french mechanics who i know thought i was mad for hollowing my cat ! so im very limited on what to do or how to do it!! and need help and sound advice!

Next step for me is fitting an intercooler, im in france so theres lots of dci clios and kangoos around in the scrap yards, from what ive read here with the limited internet access i have the dci 100 intercooler is a better option, smaller.. more efficient.. but they are very rare round here and i havnt found one yet in the last 6months so im probably going to source one from a dci 80 as soon as i have the information and parts i need to do it!

Once ive an intercooler im coming back to the uk for a visit and at the same time ill get a remap!

If you could point me to any threads/topics that have guides to installing an intercooler to my car please do it would be much appreciated!

yes mate, mine is a straight through, no back box no cat. i did originally empty my cat but it was abit raspy, so i had a decat pipe made up, sounds more agressive now. cost me no more than £50 to get a decat made and buy a length of 3 inch pipe.

that intercooler is similar to a dci 100 intercooler, it will work if you get the correct size pipe work made up to go from turbo to that intercooler + custom brakets to hold it in place. easy enough to do !. then a map for a few more HP

if you have a look on ( www.cliodci.net ) there's plenty of modded clio dci's! :)

  clio dci 65
Thanks alot i dont have internet at home so i get limited time online!
If you come across any complete write ups think of me please!
Getting pipe work made up for an installation will be difficult but still possible.
I was hoping i could take an intercooler with all the pipes straight from a clio dci 80 from a scrapyard and it would have everything i need to install on mine?
But again thanks for the link ill get on there soon.

Raz dont suppose you have a website or something for the guys that made the custom pipe?
i'm interested in getting one made :)
also did you fit it yourself? if so was it a pain?

these's are the guys that made mine, http://www.custom-chrome.co.uk/

i had to take my cat to them so they could get the mounting and flanges the right size.

yes, i did it myself, far easier to do on a ramp, but if you havent got access to a ramp, jack it up onto axle stands, undo the drivers side drive shaft, undo the two strut bolts and take the strut out, take the shaft out. then undo the 3-4 bolts that hold the cat to bracket- engine, two nuts on cat to exhasut flex joint, 4 stud nuts on cat above on turbo ( these can be really fun to take off, you either get the whole stud come out or if you are lucky, the nuts come off.

pull cat away from turbo and pull down from underneith carefully, take out from the arch . you now have your cat off from the car :)

bit of a pain to do , but worth it for the turbo spinning up more faster as less restrictive. noise is cool aswell :D

Hi, I am going to decat my clio dci. I want to know if you noticed a very bad smell after decatting dci? Is this feasible? Is it hard to stand? I also wonder if I should do and weld a "straight" pipe in an old cat, because I don't have much money to buy a downpipe and dont want to have much drone loudness? Cat in 1.5 is quite rounded with some bends. Is it good idea? I do not want too loudness after decatting, so I think getting rid of resonance in the decatted cat is a good idea? :)

Ideally you want to replace the standard cat with a pipe rather than gut the standard one, but it can be done just cut it open, gut and weld closed again.

You shouldn't notice any increased smell, not like you would on a decat petrol anyway, you will get a bit more smoke on throttle, a bit better low down response and a little more exhaust noise and turbo whistle. A worth while mod even if it is a bit of a pain in the c**t to fit

Thanks Martin, I think U r right . I will try to cut it open, gut , put in a straight or angled pipe and weld close it again.
It`s common in turbo diesels that decatting ,gives a little bit of torque and faster turbo boost. As on the gif below , that `s an 1.9tdi 110PS (+ 9nm , +2-3PS) with cat and w/o a cat
