ECU Dead!

My 1.2 16v 2001 plate has been of the road now for 3 weeks! My local auto electrician diagnosed an ECU fault and said I would have to take it to Renault! I did and the dealer has said I need a new ecu at a cost of £688 including VAT and fitting. Is this a good price??! I have only covered 30,000 miles why has it failed so soon! Any thoughts?

very doubt it has, what are the actual problems with it. it could be something very simple and i could point you in the right direction :) most probably a cheap easy repaire you can do yourself

Its most probably the ecu cover cutting through the loom rather than the actual ecu at fault as its a common thing. Not sure on the price.

  Volvo S60 T5
ECU is about £450+vat, have only changed 3 or 4 of them.
Its usually loom related or the wiring on the ns of the engine bay.

The loom has been looked at in the past and the metal cover remove and the wires taped up. The orange light in the centre of the dash came on, and this time it wasnt the trottle body! the car then wouldnt go quicker than 20mph!
Can i buy a second hand ecu?

Yep so long as it sform the exact same model then you need to either have it unlocked £100 or so or swop the UCH keys and ignition transponder pictup as well frm the doner thge ECU came from.
