Elf evolution vs carlube triple r

  monaco 172
Wernt sure where to put this but just though I'd share my views from my experience.

I've changed my oil every 5k with carlube triple r 5 40 and I've been getting a grating noisy dephaser sound when warm and cold.

So this service time I went for some elf evolution sxr 5 40 and no dephaser sound at all.

Not sure if the oil is alot better or if it's just the service but engine is now quiet as hell

I've heard a few poor reviews about the triple r on this forum, it's cheap but prbly worth steering clear!

I have no idea about oils apart from what I've read on here. However - price tends to dictate quality to some respect in most things, so whilst I dont always got for the top end stuff, I'd certainly stay clear of the low end cheap like triple r unless I'd seen reviews praising it to the max.

I use Motul 300v Chrono 5w40 everytime and never missed a beat (mechanically)!

Also use motul 300v 10w40 in the impreza. Expensive but worth it IMHO.

When I used triple r I also got a tappety top end when cold, changed back to some decent stuff straight away and the noise went, terrible oil!

its our standard oil on services, never had a problem, I have a habbit of trying out everything before selling it to customers, did a full day at oulton park on the triple R and my engines are fine

+1
Triple R is fine, they used to do a 15w50 Motorsport Fully Synth, which I ran in my 21 until they stopped producing it, essentially it was Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w50 only at less than half the price as Mobil is £69 for 4litres. I paid £28 for 5l of the Triple R.

I will add that I'm one of the only people in the 21TOC to never have had an engine let go, in 8years at 21psi.......most others used 10w40 Magnatec and have replaced more liners than I've had trainers.

Ive munched a few gearboxes tho ;)

If you had said Halfords oil I'd have requested you be banned lol

They do/did a 'Motorsport' oil claiming to be 15w50.....ran 21 upto temperature and thought 'Hmmm thats noisy' - pulled dipstick out and when I say it ran off the dipstick, I mean it looked like warm urine, no consistency whatsoever.

halfords 15w50 fully synth was made by comma, and the exact same stuff as comma motorsport 15w50. So it follows that it was probably just mobil 1 15w50 in a different bottle as they're the same company
