Elise goes Bad Ass

  Turbos.
We're at Spa next week for a long race so with the engine doing about as much it can, the team had a think about a new aero package. The Elise had a stock Motorsport body, whereas the BMWs etc. in our series are considerably wider than their production counterparts, so we thought we deserved a few bits!

So, the car now has a long diffuser, fully covered underfloor and new splitter. The barge boards on the side increase floor area, which means more air and ultimately more downforce (in addition to the other bits).

The previous underfloor had NACA ducts to cool the gearbox etc., so in order to be safe, the gearbox now has its own cooler.

Its the first time i had been in the car with the sequential's paddles now working. The geartronics system has an 'A' for Auto mode which means upshifts are done without me needing to do anything!

The interior is starting to fill with buttons mind you! The gearlever is left in just in case something goes wrong with the paddles...

I went out for the first two sessons. A sensor going meant i pulled off on the first corner, so not the greatest start! The ECU was tricked to ignore it and after 10 mins i was back on circuit, eventually setting a best of 51.2 seconds by lunch.

It was then time to hand over to our tame racing driver who will be co-piloting at Spa. The eagle eyed will notice the fog light holes have been removed, so we played around with the front to see how the rad would react to less/more air.

James was then on his way and managed to eventually get to a 50.4 second lap after tweaking the setup. The aero package had increased downforce but brought in slight understeer...

We viewed datalogging to see any areas room for improvement, i told James to stop being a pussy round Druids!

Everything went well, just hoping it all sticks together for the Spa race now!

Didn't get much time to look around the paddock. Some Time Attack Evos were they but they both were fairly unreliable, one going home early!

An interesting car on a personal level was the Reyland Cossie...

It sounded like a hurricane so not sure what power its packing, but the litle Elise was more than match!

And thats it... will do another thread after Spa, its my first foreign event and i can't wait!

Those aero additions look great! Any idea how much time they've saved over a lap?

Cheers!

About a second at Brands. Doesn't sound much, but on a longer track (i.e Spa!) the difference would be more marked. The sequential is worth a second or two as well.

...and people thinking owning a Gallardo for road use is impressive...

Elise looks great. Love the central driving position! Is there a pump associated with the gearbox cooler? Someone was trying to get something sorted for the G40 gear boxes but the idea stalled when they couldn't get a hold of a suitable oil pump for a sensible price...though given the extent of the modification to the aero I doubt you were penny pinching with the gearbox cooler.

Wow. Nice car. Great opportunity racing it at spa. Like the work you've done. You going to play with the rear ARB to try and control the understeer?

A second at Brands Indy is very impressive if you ask me! Bolt on pre-developed parts or custom made?

  Turbos.
In all honesty, not got a clue! I just asked what the new cooler was far, i'm not very mechanically minded i'm afraid...

The diffuser is intended for a a Mk2 Exige racer and bodged to fit. It is the max length for regs, ideally it would protude slightly past the wing. The rest of it just a case of covering everything underneath based on well known principles.

It was the front ARB that was softened, and a little rear wing was taken off as it doesn't do that much. We might run without a wing at all later in the season and go for a CSL style boot lip instead.

Looks ace Rob

From memory the Sierra is running ~600bhp

How much does it cost to run the Elise for a seasons racing, out of interest?

  Turbos.
Its kind of how long is a piece of string because we are doing 'arrive and drive.' If you have the competance and time to look after the car yourself, its only really entry fees and the occasional hiccup. We on the other hand, have a race team with us at every track day, test day and race weekend. The car is also transported and stored for us, and an instructor/mate is generally hired for new tracks.

When you factor in mods my dad would probably go into six figures a season, but a guy on his own could do it for nearer £15k i would say. Its things like an engine blowing up that will kill you, its happened 3 times in one year... £6k a pop!

OMFG!!!

Su-f**king-perb! Function, function, function and bollox to what it looks like!

Love the gearbox oil cooler addition, the interior, the flappy paddles - everything. :approve:

You're one lucky bloke, m8! I'd be happy just to watch it, let alone drive it.

Yep, i'm certainly a lucky lad getting to drive it!

Might convert to a 2 seater next year so i can share the experience a bit!

  Turbos.
Yep! Ironically the other similar car in our series has Honda power and it had head gasket failure recently, lol.

I wonder if his engine went pop 3 times in the season though? That sounds expensive...

Could run a stock K20 Honda engine and get circa 240bhp in what would probably be quite a reliable package.

saw you on tv on friday afternoon, think it was around rockingham speed way, very impressed and the car looks fantastic!

awesome!
some money in motorsport when you think it costs you lot up to 6 figs for a season...to think how much it must set back worldwide more commercialised series.

Good luck at Spa Rob!

8/10ths off your co-driver round brands though! That pedal on the right might help!

Who is he?

but you would then have to go up a class and be the slowest car on the grid, the supercharged honda loti are at the back of the grid in the big boys class

  Turbos.
As Fred says, the Honda Supercharged car has to go up a class so its largely pointless. Personally, i wouldn't have developed this car so much but my dad is uber competitive!

The guy is called James Barclay Jon, he used to be a touring car driver in the supertourer days for Vauxhall. He also raced in the original Lotus one make series. Of course, if i had another crack with the better setup i would have blitzed him... ;)

The car i mentioned is the same one Fred mentioned actually, and he has head gasket failure quite a few times. I think the biggest problem with the S/C cars is the amount of heat which other components can't cope with.

Nice to see i've finally been seen on Motors TV, don't miss me in the Sevenoaks Chronicle ;)

Thanks for the good luck wishes for Spa... need to work out how to get video on YouTube. There is an old clip of Andy Wallace driving it in very old spec...
