Sad that I never got to see it in action. If not the Ibiza, how about a Cordoba 3 door? Again a bit different, subtle and fairly cheap. Plus the exclusivity???

If there are any susupension / handling specialists out there that want to take the car to see if they can do anything they can ( yoz / fred any contacts ?? )
 
Just want to get the problem sorted and fitting the engine in a car it was designed to go in seems the right way forward. Imagine doing 120mph in a straight line and then someone grabs the steering wheel and yanks it to the left really hard - this is what is happening 2 or 3 times when you accelerate in a straight line
 
I know someone with a 400bhp (with gas on) fiesta but he doesnt get much torque steer because the setup was tweaked alot. I asked him about it when i heard how much power it was producing! He mentioned something about custom lower arms and having all the geometry sorted out by a suspension guy. Thing is though, you said yours is a drive train problem so i dont think its the same... guessing though as i dont know the first thing about that kinda job!
 
It might have one already, but have you thought about running an intermediate bearing on the longest drive shaft? That way the effective length would be the same and you'd be able to equalise the angles.

I know a lot of V-dubs just run different thickness shafts but not sure about the 1.8t's.

at the end of the day your main problem is the FK's, they're not intended for 400bhp clios

also are you still running those welded up driveshafts?
 
You can have it for a few weeks to see if you can do anything - its still got the FKS' but they are fine on jordies car ?? the drive shafts are welded up and come out of the box at stupid angles - i think this is the problem
 
yeah but matt you have to remember the clio wasn't designed to have a TT engine, and the FK's wern't designed to carry TT engine (although i doubt there's much weight difference between a TT engine and a 172 engine?)

have you tried adjusting the ride height to improve the angle of the driveshafts


proper custom shafts are available from GKN motorsport (which is what i'm using) for about £170 each, they make them to fit your car
 
Matt the only real way to go with it would be to spaceframe the rear out and drop it in there.

I would suggest a mk1/mk2 golf and do this rear engined rear wheel drive
 
unequal shafts arent too much bother its the angles really where your problem is

My corsa - 2ltr 16v conversion i used the original astra shafts and machined the corsa hubs out to fit them

the shafts were different lengths but the angles were the same, i know of 350bhp corsa C20LETS with the same setup and they get a little torque steer but nothing crazy
 
Im wanting to keep it in the clio if possible - if i dont get anywere i will V-dub the lump. Im open to ideas and suggestions lads

Thing is the red top is a vauxhall lump and fits nice and smug in the corsa hole. Ive had to cut my n/s chassis leg out and strengthen the surround just so the n/s shaft will fit. There is a constant wobble as your driving in a straight line.
 
How about slapping a TT front end/subframe thing in?
(I know nothing about this, but i'm "brainstorming" lol)

Yeh i totally understand that matt im just giving an example of high powered engines in the wrong chassis without torque steer.

Thought about RWD ??
Get a ford type 9 box, bellhousing made up, can use the sierra diff unit with different ratios!

Wouldnt be a total ballache, lots of fabricating parts and cutting out a tunnel for the propshaft, cut rear end out and spaceframe part for the diff to sit on! Use sierra rear hubs so the shafts fit straight in!

Would be a great project, lots of thinking!! :D
 
Matt how would fiting the engine in a VW shell make the car easier to deal with? Just thinking can you not have the CLio front end modified to be more VW like as such?

How badly cut away is the chassis, any pictures?

What aout selling the project and making a twin engined 172? surly it would be similar speeds even with more weight due to 4 wheel drive.Then 50 Hp Nos etc would be better.
Looking at the picture i take it lowering the engine more would help in which case why not run bigger wheels to lift the car a bit so you can lower the engine?
 
Its a pity your taking the engine out of the clio, but im sure the next car you stick it in will be just as great! Just need to decide.... hmmm.....

its an old rover tarmac rally car they bought from the MG XPower auction is it not?
 
It sounds like your best off finding some way to run the arrangement that my 205 and many other pugs/citroens use. The longest shaft is in two sections, one section is identical to the other shaft, the other section is a plain shaft that slots into the gear box. This long plain shaft is supported by a bearing in a bracket thats bolted to the engine block. So the result is that the effective length and angles is the same.
