engine cover

hi all

ok, day off, so I am about to start removing my engine cover to paint.

I have grey primer, monaco blue spray, and clear laquer for it.

also 800 and 1200 grade paper.

so the plan is, remove, clean, sand with 800, prime, sand with 1200, 3 coats of monaco, then 3 coats of laquer.

does this sound ok? or am I missing anything that could just w@nk the whole thing right up? lol

ps not very experienced sprayer or painter so, here goes .... if worst comes to worst, I can always get another one, right? :rasp:

i did my cover liquid yellow or as renault actually call it sirus yellow,i did grade 800 wet and dry then primed,2 coats of prime then 1500 grade wet and dry,the 2 coats of base colour as the yellow needed a base colour cuz it was thin,the 3 coats or the yellow,then 3 laquer over 24 hours,came out wiked

how long do you suggest leaving each layer to dry?

for example

sand, then prime.. how long?

sand, then paint (15 mins between coats or an hour?)? then when all coats are finished, how long until laquer?

then how long once laquer is applied until finished and ready to be heated up by the engine?

If you're leaving them to dry in a very warm environment then 30 minutes will be a good length of time.

However if it's cold Id suggest an hour between layers. But from priming to paint to lacquer you need to leave it to dry overnight before applying the paint or lacquer.

So it should go:

Clean
v
Sand
v
Primer
v
wetsand
v
dry overnight
v
few layers of paint
v
dry overnight
v
lacquer a few times

Leaving about a 30-60 minute slot between each layer of primer, paint or lacquer.

Good tips, cheers Where did you get your Monaco paint from? And do they do B76 Flame Red?

I want to polish up the RenaultSport writing as well, anyone know how to do it?

well I got my paint from a shop called east hill autos in dartford, kent. halfords didn't seem to have it, or a few local auto places, but luckily last one I tried did.

I have cleaned, sanded, primed, and wet sanded so am now leaving it to dry over night. I'll get pics when it's done. how good the monaco colour match will be is a dif. story, but to be fair, it's only an engine cover so, I doubt very much anybody will be going hmmmmm the colour match isn't spot on.

my plan is to do the metal yellow (on the actual engine), the cover / oil cover blue, get some of the yellow 16v stickers for it, then gently touch the top of the Renaultsport and lines in with a VERY fine brush in monaco.

I did actually do the letters top in yellow when I painted the calipers with the yellow heat resistant paint, but now I want them monaco, with the surrounding area yellow.

should look ok.. or I am hoping so anyway!

I am a fan of the carbon one but it is expensive. this has cost me 20 so far. that is, a can of monaco spray, a can of clear laquer, a can of grey primer, 4x 1200 sheet, 4x 800 sheet, and a tin of hamerite yellow.

Nice going mate Halfords do, do a Monaco blue but Im unsure of how spot on the match is tbh but they vary their colours across the stores for some reason!

ok, I have now completed this, it needs more time to dry before I can drive with it I think, until tomorrow evening, but it is touch dry and ready, guess it may need a polish when it is done, to bring it up nice and shiney.

I did refit it, after painting the metal works yellow with hammerite, as I didn't fancy risking masking + spraying in the engine bay, however, altho I have not yet done the faces of the lettering (renaultsport) in monaco against the yellow, I'm not sure it looks that good to be fair.

it looks strange.. has anyone ever thought of doing their cover a dif colour to the car? for example, a really vibrant blue, or perhaps even racing blue, against monaco? so the engine stands out (shows itself off) in a different colour?

just curious as I am tempted to now spray it majorly different colours just to find out lol

anybody with loads of engine bay pics with dif rocker cover styles?

I am even tempted to go mirror shiney black with red decoration.

perhaps I'm just bored ? week off lol

have you taken off the sound deadening/ heat insulation stuff from the underside of the bonnet? ive heard that it rubs on the engine cover and destroys your cover once it is painted.

I would take a pic now but it is too dark... it does look good don't get me wrong, the bit I am most unhappy with, is the yellow. I used hammerite, and obviously it is never going to be a smooth tidy job with that. you can see brush marks if you look close up.

bit lost as to what else to do for the metal tho? spraying is out of the question if it's me doing it. I'm not great as it is. wouldn't risk it under the bonnet!

green - I didn't remove it yet. not heard that myself I must admit. now you have said it, it's coming off just incase. removing it really doesn't do it any damage anyway, right? it is just sound insulation right?

yes mate its just sound insulation i think. i think its when the engine moves slightly so would rub on the painted cover. a lot of people remove it.

as for the brush marks on the hammerite. could you not just apply it quite think then use a fine grade and wetsand it down smooth. then just a light polish or cutting compound to bring it to a shine.
