Engine cuts out from cold.

  Clio Mk3
I've a problem with my engine cutting out on a Clio Mk3. It happens every time I go in the car. It starts OK and I drive off, down the road. When I get about 150 yards to the junction at the end of the street, the engine dies. I start up again and everything is fine from then on. It gets a bit worse when the weather is really cold where it may cut out two or three times in the first half mile but after that, it is always OK.

I'm a real thicko when it comes to cars. Will it have an automatic choke in the Clio? If it does, would this be the first thing to check and what would I be looking for?

Does it smoke a fair bit when it is cold? And when you first driving it but stop when the car is fine and doesn't cut out anymore? If that makes sense.

I've never noticed any smoke. Once it has cut out and I start back up again, it's fine, unless it's really cold or if the next junction is close to the first.
