Engine/gearbox Knocking. Help?

Year - 2003
Miles - 50,500

Dont know if anyone can help.
When i take my foot off the accelerator, there is a light knocking sound coming from the engine area. When applying throttle, even very lightly I cant seem to hear the knocking. Its especially noticeable when de-celerating for a slow corner, and when on poor road surface.
Thing is, I tried taking the car out of gear and cruising in neutral and I dont [seem] to get the knocking then?
Its not REALLY loud, but its aggravating me a bit now. I thought it was the suspension to start with.

I know some people on here have tightened up gearbox mounts, engine mounts, replaced dog bones etc, but I dont know if these symptoms require the above to be done?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Hi mate, got exactly the same to sort on mine but not only do I get the knocking I also get a loud reverberation through the whole car when accelerating hard. Got to find time to do it but I think it's just a case of moving the engine forwards a touch. There was a post with lots of pics of someones mount actually touching the car where it had moved out of position, can't remember where I saw it though but will have a look. Sounds like the same thing for the both of us!

So it would knock slightly when in gear, but not when in neutral?

Hope someone else on here can shed some light on the situation.

I'll try it our again in the morning, but on my way home [25 miles] it didn't seem to knock when in neutral.

ps, last serviced end of November 06, oil level full.

Er. It DOES seem to knock when in neutral when decellerating esp. on poor road surface.

And I get a louder knock from the right side of the engine, front wing area when turning 90deg left.

Should I try the suspension top mount washer fix? I've lasered a pair ready. Or check the O/S engine mount bracket? Don't know what I'd be looking for there.:S

go for the fix strut mate first i am doing this to try and eliminate my knocking noise if not going to see if the mount under the battery is loose goodluck mate
