if you had a couple of Renault sport engines and had no idea what age of car they came out of is there anyway to find out what they are? i.e. engine numbers?

also are all engine components inter-changeable between 172 p1, 172 p2 and 182 engines?

F4R is the engine code for all 172/182's
738 is for the 182
730 are for the mk1 172 (Some Mk1's use the 732 engine with a manual throttle body).
732 is for the 172 Cups
732 and 736 are for the mk 2 172's
Parts are interchangable there the same basically the Mk2 172 has electric throttle bodies so thats there give away. the 182 having its 4-2-1 manifold. Early Mk2 172's used the none turbo block head but you'd have to strip them down and look at a few to know.

nice one thx, the reason is i bought an engine out of an x reg 172, but i discovered its dropped a valve:dapprove:

i have now found another slightly fire damaged engine going begging so i'm gona get hold of that. I don't know how much damage the stray valve has done yet as i havent removed the head but i fear the worst!!

I noticed the 2nd engine has an electric throttle body on rather than a cable one so i guess its a phase 2 172.

i knew there was something different but didnt know what, whats the difference in cylinder heads then?

so you could have the ph1 cylinder on a ph2 engine then, not worthwhile i know

  172 cup'd extreme
some heads are good others are crap ive seen a fair few. phase ones all seem to be pretty decent

thats interesting, the phase 1 head has dropped an inlet valve. So aslong as the head isnt damaged it might be worth re-using it with by swapping one of the inlet valves from the Phase 2 head.

Maybe i should take some photos and create a little document as i strip them?

Ashy.

That would be a great guide if you didn.
Just have to make sure the dropped valve hasn't done any damage to the head.
