Engine immoboliser question

When I bought my car, it only came with one key....

The key has an immoboliser fob on it. I can get a key cut no probs, but if I lose the fob (i.e. it breaks off) then I'm basically fuct.

There are no papers to identify the immoboliser make, absolutely nothing.

What can I do to ensure that I don't get left stranded?
