engine mamagement light

This came on tonight, was just literally plodding along, car still drives fine , switched engine off etc and still there, when installing my rs tuner a few weeks back it read a fault code about the tps but in the guide on here it says it happens everytime so dont worry ? Now where shall i start ? Any tips ..

Plug it back in to your RS Tuner and read the current fault codes.

Ah right, you'll need to get hold of an OBDII code reader then to find out whats causing the lights to come on !

Just done some reading and found that these throw the light on when u change fuel (unleaded to super etc) and today (15miles before the light came on) i put in my 2nd consecutive full tank of tesco momentum in , so guessing thats it ..

The engine management light being on could mean one of a number of things. There is zero point in reading about other peoples symptoms until you get your car plugged in and get the fault codes read. This will tell you exactly what has caused the light to come on.

Yeah i know but its a bit of a coinsidence isnt it , apparantly will reset itself after 10 starts so will see how it goes

My emissions light came when I first used Tesco momentum too. I did some research and decided that was the problem. The light didn't go out after 10 starts though.

Then my dad came home with a code reader so we plugged it in and the car thought that the cat was knackered, which is understandable as I have a decat lol. Anyway, we turned off the light and it hasn't come back on since.

The light also comes on if your lambada sensor is on its way out, might be worth plugging it in instead of guessing

Lol . cheers mate , its still running perfect, still returns 38mpg on my commute which is alot of stop start/no motorways etc . il see if i can get it plugged in this week

Do you have a decat Gary? I personally wouldn't worry about it to much of everything seems fine, but get it checked out for peace of mind.

I personally don't understand why people ask questions on here and either don't take the advice of people or people who give out false advice.

There is no emissions light, there is no exhaust gas monitoring light. It's the engine management light. That's it. It's there to indicate that a problem has occurred and the only way to find out what the problem is, is to plug it in to a code reader.

Speculating on what the problem is will not solve anything. Neither will saying what is the "common" reason for the light coming on. It could be any number of different things so you just need to plug it in and find out.

Had it plugged it 2day , picked up lambda sensor , he reckons the change in fuel just upset the sensor so cleared it and it hasnt come on since

light came back on today , anyone know if its true that the lambda before the cat will make it run bad , and the lambda after the cat will just put the light on ? so i know which 1 to buy

If the lights come back on, there's a problem but it will need plugged in again to see what the new fault code is and whether or not this matches the first code.

Pre-Cat lambda sensor adjusts the cars fueling based on the exhaust fumes and is the most common to go.

Post-Cat lambda sensor only checks for a change in exhaust fumes from the first reading to make sure the cat is working correctly.

Both lambdas can put the light on.

Cheers mate, il get it plugged in again on the weekend, the strange this is the car drives great, the last few days my mpg has gone up to 40-41mpg from 38 doing the same trip that i always do

i sit at 29mpg round town. Perhaps the car needs to be revved a bit more often lol.
