Engine noise questions

  Focus rs
Guys went to see the 172cup today and it has a Diesel engine noise coming from the inlet cam which I believe is the dephaser pulley? The Campbell was changed at 38k and the car has now done 77k so I assume will need doing now.

Question is I'm quite competent with the spanners and have rebuilt cossie, Zetec engines etc and do everything else on a car myself except gearboxes, would it be something that I could do or is it a specialist job and if so at what cost?

Car also has a knocking noise when breaking, when I looked under the car the anti-roll bar bushes looked perished, is there any other bushes it could be?

Probably still be specialist due to needing the correct locking tools, although its roughly £600 with dephaser changed, you might be lucky and have a trader off here near you though who quite often have deals running.

Bet that soup has well and truly gone off by now?

In all seriousness, I'd recommend still taking it to a specialist. As JPD172 says, you need the correct locking tools to carry out the job.

If you've rebuilt cossie and zetec engines then you'll be able to change a dephaser and belt on these engines. It is advisable (very) to use the correct locking tools and be very familiar with the procedure before doing it.

Most specialists will be under £400 for a belt change but another £170 odd for the dephaser.
