I know it will vary from place to place, but how much roughly does it cost to have a 172 engine rebuilt? just to standard spec and would having the engine out make a big difference in the price?

depends very much on the condition of the internals when it's stripped. whether or not it needs valve guides can be a difference of over £200 for example, and that's just one item. Ideally you'd just do everything but sometimes customers only want to have what needs doing changed, rather than everything just because you're there.

If your just looking for a replacement its cheaper just to buy a decent used engine (make sure it has decent service history etc)

well I was popping over to chertsey tomorrow after work probably 5:30-6 ish if you are around? only really need you to give me a rough idea if it need a dephaser etc. also what history did that 65k engine have?

Good service history on the engine, It was actually 69k when removed, Belts & dephaser previously done, Shall bring the service book with me if I remember!
